Marshalltown man charged with felony assault

Mwilewa

On Sunday afternoon just after 2 p.m., the Marshalltown Police Department responded to a 911 call for service 11 N. 3rd Ave. after receiving a report about an assault in progress. Upon arrival, officers found that a 42-year-old male had been severely beaten, and he was transported to the Marshalltown hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Following an investigation, the MPD arrested Ezera Mwilewa, age 22, of Marshalltown, and charged him with willful injury – resulting in serious injury, a Class C Felony. According to a criminal complaint, the defendant “punched the victim several times, knocking the victim to the ground, and kicked the victim in the face after backing up and running at the victim gaining

momentum for the kick.”

“The defendant then stomped the victim’s head into the ground, leaving the victim unconscious for several minutes,” the arrest report reads. “When the victim regained consciousness, the victim was unable to answer simple questions like his name before losing consciousness on and off.”

As of Monday, Mwilewa remained in the custody of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office on a $10,000 bond, and the investigation is ongoing. The Marshall County 911 Communications Center, the Marshalltown Fire Department and the UnityPoint Ambulance Service all assisted the MPD in its response.

A preliminary hearing is currently set for Dec. 21.
