Local law enforcement officials report accidents due to icy roads
The icy road conditions around Marshalltown and the T-R coverage area caused at least a few accidents on Wednesday, according to local law enforcement leaders.
Marshalltown Police Chief Chris Jones said the MPD dealt with three property damage accidents since 2 p.m. and two minor injury accidents. Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips said that in the rest of the county, the MCSO had been “lucky” and only had one weather related crash that involved a vehicle going into a ditch with no injuries.
Phillips added that the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) was out putting product on hard surfaces. Traffic was light in the afternoon, but he expected it to pick up with commuters returning from work.
“Reduced speed and following distance helps tremendously,” Phillips said.
A social media post from the MPD on Wednesday afternoon warned drivers to stay off the roads as every patrol unit in town was currently working on an accident. Several area school districts announced early dismissals on Wednesday, and GMG, South Tama, BCLUW and North Tama delayed classes by two hours on Thursday due to the conditions.
