Seeing Anew Part II debuts at Fisher Art Museum Feb. 27

T-R PHOTO BY ROBERT MAHARRY — An art exhibit titled “Seeing Anew Part II: Through the Collector’s Eye” will debut at the Marshalltown Arts & Civic Center (MACC) on Friday, Feb. 27.
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO — The late philanthropists and art enthusiasts Dorothy and Bill Fisher.

The Marshalltown Arts & Civic Center (MACC) will be the site of Seeing Anew Part II: Through the Collector’s Eye when the art exhibit debuts at the Fisher Art Museum with a free public reception Feb. 27, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with refreshments provided.

This follows the success of last summer’s Seeing Anew: a Local View, which was on display in the Monet Reception Hall. It gathered the works of Marshall County artists. Part II will have a different format.

“So Seeing Anew Part II is definitely a build off of the first exhibit,” MACC Brand & Events Experience Supervisor Madi VanGundy said. “There are some nice surprises in the exhibit that tie in Bill and Dorothy Fisher and their generous donation of this art to the community.”

Nancy Adams, who is a Fisher Art Museum committee member and also wrote the content for the pieces’ QR codes, said this would be the first time in several years this artwork will be viewable to the public.

“Our community will again be able to see familiar, beloved paintings, and it is the first time anyone has seen this particular set of paintings and sculptures exhibited together as they are,” she said. “The Fisher Art Collection is a singular body of work that reflects the impeccable taste and prescient eyes of Bill and Dorothy Fisher. It literally represents the emergence of modern art in two and three dimensions. Pieces in the exhibit represent multiple styles and movements, including Realism, Impressionism, Post-War Modernism, Expressionism and Fauvism.”

A total of 15 pieces will be on display, representing the following artists:

• André Brasilier

• Rene Genis

• Yuri Sinicki

• Christian Petersen

• Maurice Utrillo

• Jean-Jacques Henner

• Kees van Dongen

• Christian Lemesle

• Bernard Buffet

• Albert Lebourg

• Edward Vuillard

• Henri Lebasque

This portion of the collection underwent professional restoration in 2020.

“The Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation provided a $100,000 matching grant for the restoration of the artwork. The community very generously stepped up with private support to raise the additional funds, which met the total fundraising goal of $200,000,” said Foundation Executive Director Heidi Pierson Dalal. “The foundation also contributed a grant last year for $12,000 for the MACC Fisher Art Museum committee to re-engage with Edwards Creative to design Seeing Anew Part II, the same professional exhibit design firm the committee worked with for Seeing Anew Part II which opened in September 2022 when the Marshalltown Arts & Civic Center opened. Additionally, I’ve been a long-standing member on the Fisher Art Museum committee and have led, alongside several other committee members, the curation and design of both exhibits. The Fisher Art Collection archives have been a wonderful resource to exhibit the collection and its history.”

The exhibit will be open through 2027.

“I think that this is obviously a great exhibit for longtime supporters of the art collection, because they can see it restored,” VanGundy said. “But I’d also love to see our younger generations, Millennial, Gen Z people come see art for the first time. I think that this is going to be a really fun, relaxed, celebratory event and a nice way to just come celebrate community and see art, and I think it’ll be a great time. So I’m really hopeful we’ll get some new faces in here too.”

VanGundy added that people can always check the website for updated information.
