Robert Dean Thorn “Bob”, 85, of Marshalltown, IA went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Grandview Heights Healthcare and Rehab in Marshalltown after struggling with complications from a long-term illness, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 26, 2024, at Journey Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place beginning 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. Anderson Funeral Homes of Marshalltown has been entrusted with the arrangements. Bob was born in Cantrel, MO on October 2, 1938, to Clifford Dallas Thorn and Iola Irene Miller.
After graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1956, he enlisted in the US AirForce and was stationed at Tindel AirForce base in Panama City, FL. Before serving in the AirForce, he married his high school sweetheart, Judy Saunders, on July 29, 1956, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Sandra, and Steve Stephenson, at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown.
After his service in the AirForce they returned to Marshalltown where he made a career as a skilled tradesman licensed plumber for Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #33 of Des Moines, IA. Bob traveled and worked throughout the state on numerous large construction projects.
Bob was a member of the Isaac Walton League and a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, now known as Journey Church, in Marshalltown. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending as much time as possible camping, boating, hunting, and fishing. He loved gospel music and looked forward to spending his Saturday evenings with his wife tuning into RFD-TV and watching Molly B’s Polka Party.
Bob will be missed by his wife of 67 years, Judith (Saunders) Thorn, a son, Kevin (Deanna) Thorn, two daughters, Karla (David) Hood and Robin (Shawn) Wenzel, seven grandchildren; Ashley (Mike) DeRuyscher, Brandon (Morgan) Thorn, Keaton Thorn, Courtney Thorn, Levi (Alyssa) Hood, Alex (Kayla) Hood, and Drew (Roxanne) Wenzel, and seven great-grandchildren; Alayna, Zackery, and Aleia Thorn, and Michael, Mason, Amirrah, and Aa’Layah DeRuyscher. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters, Jean Weatherman and Joan George, and an infant grandson, Garrett Hood.
