Fred Diers
Lucian “Fred” Diers, 89, of Grinnell, died Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Sunny Hill Care
Center in Tama.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, on Monday, April 13, 2026, at Cox-Smith
Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of service. Burial will be in
Wallace/Wick Cemetery, 1270 33rd Ave, St. Charles, Iowa. The family would like to thank the Grinnell American Legion Post #53 for providing military rites.
Fred was born on March 9, 1937, the son of Louis and Carrie (Jones) Diers in Winterset,
Iowa. He attended Johnston High School. On October 1, 1955, he married Maxine
(Monahan) in Urbandale, Iowa. Fred was in the National Guard for 11 years.
He worked doing various jobs from Manatt’s, Diers Construction, Poweshiek County
Sanitarian, Adair Truck Repair, to name a few. Fred was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed
fishing, camping and boating. Maxine and Fred liked to travel and wintered in Florida,
Texas and Arizona.
Fred will be remembered by his children, Peggy (Paul Poole) Hobbs of Gilman, Cathy
(Larry) Wehrman of Laurel, Darryl (Jeanne) Diers of Montezuma, Joe Diers of
Marshalltown and Kristy (Brian) Kelderman of Wake Forest, North Carolina; 11
grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, James
Monahan; sister-in-law, Sally Evans and several nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; sisters, Margaret, Virginia, and
Eunice; and two brothers in infancy.
