Open letter to Sen. Grassley
In response to your contention that partisan Democrats have once again shut down portions of the government: The persons that voted against the passage of this last funding bill were the persons who showed integrity because they stood up for what was right. To do anything else would have made them complicit in terrorism and the unlawful detention of legal residents and American citizens.
It is your duty as a member of Congress to work out compromises with your fellow legislators and get laws passed. But, once again, you have dug in your heels and failed to do this. Approximately 73% of the people detained by ICE have been convicted of no crimes.
Our city streets are not a video game and law enforcement agents should never be heard bragging about how many times they shot someone. The Democrats have asked that DHS vet and train its officers, require them to unmask, wear body cameras, and identify themselves when detaining someone. These are minimal expectations that simply hold ICE agents to the same standards as other law enforcement agents. Your constituents are receiving reports, almost every day, of innocent people being detained in facilities without adequate food, water, sanitary facilities, and medical attention. If we are receiving these reports, so are you. That means that by voting for this bill, you are guilty of sanctioning the mistreatment, arrest, and imprisonment of innocent people. It is not the ‘Democrats’ who made the indefensible partisan choice this time.
