DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team had mixed results in the first day of the IHSAA State Wrestling Championships.

The Bobcats lost two of their five qualifiers to elimination during the opening session of Class 3A action inside the Casey’s Center.

Seniors Carson Wright (165 pounds) and Ignacio Macias (285) were forced to say goodbye the same day they said hello, falling twice on Wednesday in Des Moines.

Sophomore newcomer Nicholas Million (113) survived the busiest possible day with a 2-1 record, while seniors Nick Wise (144) and Dalton Zednichek (190) made the most of their first-round byes.

Wise — seeded second and ranked third — pushed through to the quarterfinals with a quick pin of North Scott’s Collin Kruse (24-8) in 2 minutes, 32 seconds. Wise (36-1) will wrestle seventh-seeded and fifth-ranked Stoney Wood (37-7) of Indianola in today’s action.

Zednichek (15-1) — ranked and seeded eighth — opened with a 4-1 decision in sudden victory over 11th-ranked Hunter Merk (38-12) of Waukee Northwest. He’ll face top-seeded Brayden Koester (41-4) of Bettendorf in today’s quarterfinals.

Million (28-10) took the long way through the first day in his state tournament debut, winning his opener with a dominant pin of Pleasant Valley’s Liam Dunlay in 2:39. Million was then pinned by top-ranked Diego Robertty of Iowa City West in just 43 seconds, but bounced back to pin Braxton Brink of Cedar Rapids Prairie in 3:43 to survive and advance.

Million, ranked 11th but seeded 19th, will face No. 11 seed Maxwell Baccam (35-15) of Carlisle in today’s consolation third round. Million needs two more wins to reach the medal stand.

Wright (24-12) was the first Bobcat to suffer elimination. He was defeated by Newton’s Lane Rozendaal (35-14) by technical fall, 18-1, in the first round, and he was eliminated by Oskaloosa’s Matthew Phillips (43-11) with a 14-6 major decision.

Macias (17-6) made his day a dramatic one, opening with an 8-7 loss to Pershavion Holmes of Waterloo West. Macias jumped out to a 7-3 lead thanks to a reversal and four near-fall points in the second period, but Holmes (30-17) escaped and made his comeback in the third period.

In the consolation second round, Macias fell behind Mason Hinrichs of Waverly-Shell Rock 9-3 before scoring a takedown and three back points in the final 10 seconds of his match to force overtime. Hinrichs (33-14) tallied the takedown with 44 seconds left in the extra period to claim the victory.

The Bobcats resume state wrestling action Thursday at approximately 7 p.m. back inside the Casey’s Center in Des Moines. Class 1A kicks off Thursday’s proceedings at 9 a.m., while 2A commences at 2:30 p.m.

Starting at $4.38/week.
