Stop turning Kirk into a sacred cow

Reading the September 19 Times Republican column “Teetering on the edge of the Abyss” by syndicated columnist Laura Hollis her broad brush (all leftist are soft on criminals) smearing and no mention of the Trumps self pardon of the violent Jan 6th authoritarian power play by Trump and his lunatic fringe acolytes including Christian Nationalists, her hypocrisy spews from her mouth like foamy bloody saliva from an engorged laughing hyena feasting on a fresh kill on the African savanna. Hearing the question by the political class, and the U.S. press corps. “How could the ...

End of time

In the book of Revelation, Earth-time will end, so says God! In Genesis 1:26 God is in the process of creating time and the Universe. Adam and Eve became sinners almost immediately. Since I was a baby, my family took me to church. The story of creation always intrigued me. In my heart I knew that what preachers preached, was not the whole story. I have been stuck in that “thought-syndrome” for years and have discovered that it wasn’t a fruit tree that caused sin. If God is closing out Human history, shouldn’t we see what He offers to His people or what He calls us to do? Adam ...

Fear the walking stupid

The hysterical letter by DC Larson in the Times Republican reveals why we have to fear the walking stupid on mental health care. The walking stupid are voting against state and federal programs for the mentally ill to finance a truly cruel and greedy Big Beautiful Bill. Larson blames the Democrats for letting a deranged man in Charlotte, North Carolina stab a woman to death on the Charlotte transit system. Larson twists the words of Mayor Vi Lyles calling for more compassion for the mentally ill as a heartless woke support for the deranged man. No, that was not what he meant. The ...

Legionella silence

In yet another way of keeping information about the progress of the Legionella bacteria in Marshalltown, our health departments have decided to apply the ‘personhood’ rule to the very cooling towers that are primarily suspected of spreading the disease. This makes no sense. If a restaurant fails a safety inspection and is potentially harmful to its patrons, the health department lets us know, and even if it passes, we are also notified. If a grocery store is selling vegetables that cause botulism, we are notified. But we won’t be allowed to know which towers have been causing ...

Roundtable grant award

I recently read in the Times-Republican about this grant award presented by Tom & Jade McCoy to Outreach, Inc. — the nonprofit founded by Floyd and Kathy Hammer, of Union. Outreach, Inc. will be installing Waterpoint Systems in four different primary schools in Tanzania. The people there will now have clean drinking water! We in the U.S. are so blessed — we don’t even think twice about our water system — yet this will help prevent disease and often death to others far away. This story reminded me of a very early T.V. program years ago which featured a small group of engineers ...

Metronet

I pitched a fit about Metronet digging holes. Well I wasn’t wrong. My yard still isn’t repaired. Some dirt had been thrown in PART of the holes. It washed out onto the sidewalk. I called and a guy came by with a sand shovel and scraped the mud onto the parking, up in the yard and into the street. Then a new hole was dug beside the existing pot. That mud was thrown onto the sidewalk. It’s not filled either. Neither is the hole in my neighbors yard. We were told they really aren’t our yards, but I suppose now they will be. The sidewalk in front of the Sewing Center is a disaster. ...
