Generous business

There are a lot of great businesses in Marshalltown that contribute to charitable causes. Their support to the community makes it a caring place to live. I am on the Board of a nonprofit and when I go around with my begging bowl, I am grateful for the support I get. My nonprofit is Remix Dance Studio which offers scholarships to students who can’t afford the fees and costumes. The studio provides an inclusive environment for youth, disabled adults and now Special Olympic athletes. It’s a place for all to dance and experience community. One business really gave us a boost last ...

Lessons of the Holocaust

We attended the program, “Lessons of the Holocaust,” on September 11 at Gutekunst Library in State Center. The presenter, Brad Wilkening, a former history teacher, gave a very thought provoking presentation not only about facts of the Holocaust, but, also, a charge to each of us to help make this a better world. He will be presenting this program on November 18th at the Historical Society of Marshall County. We strongly urge you to attend.

Thanks to the British Invasion

The British Invasion, at the Orpheum Theater, was a smashing success! Audience members “grooved out” as the Inner Lite band played many favorite hits from the 60’s. MC Kyle Martin guided the trip down memory lane. The production wasn’t thrown together in a day- many practices went into making the program an all time favorite of many. These musicians weren’t in it for the money- they were in for the love of music and friends. The Historical Society of Marshall County wants to thank the following people for donating their time and talents to the production. The Marshalltown ...

Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak

With the recent Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Marshall County, it has been stated that cooling towers are the suspected source. The identity of the 10 cooling towers that have been chosen for testing has been kept a secret. I assume that this decision was to protect the image of these businesses and the potential economic impact, pending the results of testing. The lack of maintenance and cleaning on these cooling towers could affect the public health and should be treated like the inspections of restaurants and made public when there is a violation. Perhaps, cooling towers on ...

Love doesn’t always win

My brother is two years older than me. There are not many traits we have in common. He was fearless and I was fearful: he had courage, I did not. Our only similarity, we grew up in a Christian home. Because of my childhood illness, it was all I could do to walk to school. I was an easy target for bullies. Most days, I planned how to get from school to home, without being seen by the eight-grade thugs. I was in fourth and brother Keith was in sixth. This day, I planned to walk with other students as they headed west. There was a footbridge across “Dry Creek.” From there, I would go ...

Donald Trump’s seven deadly sins

Sen. Joni Ernst sealed her political fate at her doomed town hall meeting with “We are all going to die,” but she foretold the fate of Donald Trump, whose ignorance about health and nutrition will kill him and millions of people living in the United States. The podcasters are already picking over the bones of Trump, whose death will probably result from his artery-clogging diet. The Seven Deadly Sins of anger, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride and sloth have already destroyed his mind, just like the brain-eating worms of his Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr. Both are ...
