Vote for Nan Benson

Virtually every Marshall County citizen living in townships and miscellaneous taxing bodies have unknowingly benefited from Nan Benson’s staff initiative. Specifically, Nan has initiated a procedure that for the first time invites township board secretaries and miscellaneous board secretaries in at budget time to assist the mostly volunteer secretaries with budget forms. As a result, the normally time consuming and stressful work is completed efficiently and accurately. Express gratitude and appreciation to Nan Benson with your vote.

Vote yes on Miller bond issue

We have another opportunity to invest in Marshalltown, as a place to work, play and grow. Our school board is seeking passage of a bond issue to Rebuild and Reimagine Miller Middle School. What’s better than investing in our kids and our town? I strongly support the decision to move on this; if not now, when? The reasons to vote YES on November 5 are many. 1. Miller is 99 years old with a classic exterior structure, but inside it is outdated for today’s learning. The old bones of Miller are in fantastic shape and cannot be replaced. 2. 70% of our Miller students live on the ...

Don’t condemn the truth

I am a Democrat. Some of my dearest friends and family are Republicans. Obviously, they hold political positions different from mine. However, I still care about them, and they remain important to me. We have had different positions for years, but we could discuss politics and agree to disagree. That is how it used to be. Now, if Trump is being discussed and a friend points out he saved taxpayer money by streamlining government and I counter with the fact that he added more to the national debt in four years than Obama did in eight years, that friend becomes irate. I think my friend ...

Take action and vote

It’s almost time for early voting here in Iowa. If you have been distressed by the lack of interest in public opinion evidenced by legislative actions the past several sessions, you can take action! The majority of us do not want a private school voucher program with no income limits, no accountability, and funding at the public-school systems’ expense. The majority of us do not want the AEAs dismantled. The majority of us want nothing to do with the carbon pipeline and especially not with the use of eminent domain. The majority of us do not agree with a 6-week abortion ban. Those ...

Tour Miller before voting

I encourage the voters of the Marshalltown Community School District to tour Miller Middle School before the bond issue vote on the November ballot. As I took the tour, there were many signs of the need for a redesigned and reimagined facility to provide a safe, effective, efficient, and inviting school. We as residents and voters can invest in a facility that encourages students and staff to achieve high levels of success. Tours are on Wednesdays at noon and at 5 p.m.

Vote for BJ Hoffman

Hardin County Cattleman, farmer, and producer are some of my titles but today I’m an advocate. I’d like to advocate and ask others to do the same. Agriculture in Hardin County is the lifeblood for our community and our culture. Over my decades of being a cattleman and producer I’ve seen highs and lows and I believe we can learn from the past. Part of the past is understanding that certain people lead better in certain situations. I wouldn’t claim to be an advisor on brain surgery and I’ll let brain surgeons be experts. When it comes to governance in Hardin County I’d prefer ...
