Our troops — who sacrifice so much for our communities and nation — deserve the very best that our country can offer. They are heroes who have selflessly answered the call to protect our interests at home and abroad and defend our communities from evil forces across the globe. Dear Editors, I support Melisa Fonseca for the Fourth Ward City Council Seat. The election is on July 16 for those who live in the Fourth Ward. Although I can’t vote in the election, I support Melisa in her goal to represent the people of the Fourth Ward and in turn serve all people of Marshalltown. I have known Melisa and her family since she was a student, and I was a teacher at Woodbury Elementary. Melisa was a kindergarten student in my classroom. Ethanol — A false solution

Misguided farm policy has cost the United States taxpayer over $400 billion over the past seven years and most of that went to a few farmers that employ highly extractive methods that are destroying both their land and our water resources to produce way more corn than we need. Ethanol is a by-product of farmers raising too much of a good thing. It is a false solution to our problems and continued support of corn-based ethanol will only serve to exacerbate our problems.
