Giving our troops the resources they deserve

Our troops — who sacrifice so much for our communities and nation — deserve the very best that our country can offer. They are heroes who have selflessly answered the call to protect our interests at home and abroad and defend our communities from evil forces across the globe. While America’s servicemembers make real sacrifices to serve our country, their current pay does not reflect this sacrifice. I recently voted for legislation to change that. In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that more needs to be done to support our troops. Military servicemembers and ...

Melisa Fonseca — The right choice

Melisa Fonseca is the right choice for our 4th Ward City Council position. She is pro-growth and sees how our community can thrive and improve. Her positive attitude, interest in listening, ability to think, and her ability to analyze differing ideas and views to make Marshalltown better makes her the clear choice. Her challenger is opposed to so many good things the community wants and needs to do, so it is imperative that 4th Ward voters get out and vote for Melisa. Early voting is currently available on the 3rd floor of the courthouse. Election day is July 16 and voting takes ...

Fonseca will be effective on city council

Dear Editors, I support Melisa Fonseca for the Fourth Ward City Council Seat. The election is on July 16 for those who live in the Fourth Ward. Although I can’t vote in the election, I support Melisa in her goal to represent the people of the Fourth Ward and in turn serve all people of Marshalltown. I have known Melisa and her family since she was a student, and I was a teacher at Woodbury Elementary. Melisa was a kindergarten student in my classroom. I watched her grow and become active in school and community activities with her family. Melisa participated in activities at the ...

Vote for Fonseca

In the most recent City Council election we Marshalltown voters missed an opportunity to add younger, up-and-coming leaders to represent us. Now voters in Ward 4 can do just that. I urge all eligible voters to come out in droves and vote Melisa Fonseca onto the City Council.

Supporting Melisa Fonseca for city council

I wholeheartedly support Melisa Fonseca in her bid for City Council. I was so encouraged when I heard Melisa was planning on running, as Melisa and her family are some of the most civic-minded people I know. This means not just focusing on or talking about the challenges we face, but being willing to put in the work toward making a difference in a positive way. And while it is not the only factor, representation matters. Melisa has excellent skills, communication style, a good knowledge base and great aptitude for learning — but she also has a diverse perspective: as a woman, a ...

Ethanol — A false solution

Misguided farm policy has cost the United States taxpayer over $400 billion over the past seven years and most of that went to a few farmers that employ highly extractive methods that are destroying both their land and our water resources to produce way more corn than we need. Ethanol is a by-product of farmers raising too much of a good thing. It is a false solution to our problems and continued support of corn-based ethanol will only serve to exacerbate our problems. Overproduction of corn is a misuse of Iowa’s most valuable natural resources-- its soil and its water. Tillage, ...
