Worden lies

Dear Mr. Maharry, You have the discretion to edit the Times Republican the way you wish, but the newspaper and you are judged by the company you keep. The latest word salad by John Worden allows this problem patron (and to its credit, the Marshalltown Public Library has never released the level of patronage or non-patronage of Worden) to twist whatever non-arguments he has into a continuous non-argument. There is no censorship or banning of the Epoch Times or the American Rifleman in Iowa libraries. He cannot make a connection between Iowa and national libraries not including it ...

A huge opportunity

Several years ago, TRAILS INC was created to shepherd the development and funding of a recently acquired 34+ mile of railroad right away from Marshalltown to Eldora. TRAILS INC’s function in Marshall County dovetails with a like organization in Hardin County. Hardin County’s trail development has been more fruitful than Marshall County’s; however, Marshall County has developed the trail in Marshall County on the right of way to the Radio Tower Road. Trail funding then stalled. However, a huge funding opportunity has very recently been presented. That funding opportunity has been ...

A response to ‘Why not the Epoch Times?’

Regarding the piece titled ”Why not the Epoch Times?” published April 15, 2024, clarification of Tonya Gaffney’s clarification is necessary. The piece states that one Marshalltown Public Librarian shared that no libraries in Iowa carried the Epoch Times. That means that no patrons requested it, and/or libraries have censored and banned it. A significant number of patrons have in a civil manner, over several months, requested that the MPL board be the first library in Iowa to accept several years’ worth of The Epoch Times newspaper and The American Rifleman magazine FREE of ...

A view of the economy

On Tuesday, May 14, an editorial appeared in the TR by Stephen Moore. I would like to respond to his article which painted the economy as all doom and gloom. He did not cite any sources, so the information was no doubt just his opinion. 1. The stock market closed above 400 this week for the first time in history.(Market Summary: Dow Jones Industrial Average) 2. The GDP for 3rd quarter was 5.2% and higher than any of the countries in the G-7. GDP has been averaging 3% for the last 3 years, which is 3 times higher than during the Trump presidency.(Simon Rosenberg) 3. Job creation during ...

Moral reckonings

Even in spite of the current decadent and oppressive moral atmosphere dominating Iowa politics today, there are still refreshing breaths of fresh air. Unitarian-Universalist churches and fellowships (often called “UU’s”) have had a long and positive historic presence throughout America, as well in Iowa. Great philosophers and thinkers such as Emerson and Thoreau and many others frequented meetings. UU attendees are known for being considerate of all beliefs and for encouraging one to be open-minded, to learn, and to seek one’s own truth. True to form, the Peoples UU Church in ...

Rule of law

On March 30, 2023 a grand jury of citizens brought an indictment against Donald Trump in New York. These were not Democratic henchmen, but citizens randomly chosen who looked at the evidence and thought it deserved a trial. It was assigned to Justice Merchan presiding over criminal matters, since 2009. The trial has presented documents and testimony to support the indictment during the persecution portion of the trial. Senator Grassley should understand the rule of law and how the grand jury works since he’s on the Judiciary Committee, yet he calls the trial a “pollical ...
