Gimbel gains NSIC Player of Week honor

BURNSVILLE, Minn. Southwest Minnesota State University quarterback Blake Gimbel was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference offensive player of the week Tuesday, after his game-winning comeback against No. 19 Minnesota Duluth on Thursday night.

The Marshalltown graduate grabbed the award for the third time in his career.

Gimbel connected with another former Marshalltown graduate Ty Steffensen on a 14-yard touchdown pass with just 23 seconds remaining. Gimbel finished the afternoon going 25-for-42 with 397 yards and tying a career-high five touchdown passes.

The Mustangs were down 23-14 at the half before Gimbel’s second-half heroics. Gimbel was 14-for-20 with two touchdowns and zero interceptions in the second stanza of the game.

The 2013 Marshalltown grad set the school single-season record of pass completion percentage at 66.4 percent, and tallied a 9-3 record since taking over as the field general for the Mustangs.

He’s 11th in team history in passing touchdowns (32), 12th in completions (334), 12th in passing yards (3,782) and 12th in total offense (3,657).
