MCC keeps postseason hopes alive with split

CENTERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College baseball team kept its season alive with a 13-3 win against Southwestern Community College after losing 5-2 to second-seeded Indian Hills Community College on Friday afternoon.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez (4-5) went to the mound, going seven innings, giving up 10 hits, three earned runs and striking out three on the Tigers’ way to a loss. Brett Braida came in for an inning of relief, giving up just two hits.

Adam Barrett was 3-for-4 and so was Max McCay, adding an RBI to his first-game resume.

The Tigers (20-32, 8-16 ICCAC) kept their season alive in game two of the afternoon with a routing of SWCC 13-3.

A five-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning put the game away early for the Tigers. Diogen Ceballos (5-4) went all five innings, giving up two hits and no earned runs, while striking out one batter.

Jose Mieses, Luis Duran and John Magnuson were all 3-for-4 in the win, while Magnuson knocked in three runs with his hits. The Tigers tallied 14 hits in game two to advance in the consolation round.

The Tigers will take on the loser of today’s 11 a.m. game between Indian Hills and Iowa Western , at 2 p.m.
