Four area softballers selected to all-Iowa Star

Postseason accolades keep rolling in for local softball players, as the Iowa Star all-conference teams were announced and 11 area athletes appeared across the three classifications.

Four girls were named to the first team, as North Tama’s Carissa Calderwood and Tessa Dvorak, GMG’s Madi Krull and Colo-NESCO’s Grace Stalzer all earned top honors.

The Redhawks pair of Calderwood and Dvorak led North Tama to a 12-6 record in conference. Calderwood hit .500 in conference play, with a .576 on-base percentage and 1.019 slugging percentage.

Dvorak makes her second-straight appearance on the first team and her third all-conference selection. She had a .510 batting average and also pitched 58 innings for North Tama, recording 57 strikeouts and a 2.78 ERA.

Stalzer helped Colo-NESCO to a 13-5 conference record, good enough for second in the Iowa Star. She hit .360 in conference play with 12 RBIs.

Krull was a stalwart for the Wolverines, hitting .377 and scoring 21 runs.

Three Royals made the second team, with Mackenna Ruffcorn, Rylee Purvis and Chelsea Henze earning those honors for Colo-NESCO. Henze set the single-season RBI record for the Royals with 36 — breaking the mark set by Ruffcorn in 2015 — while Ruffcorn broke an 18-year doubles record with 13. This was Purvis’ second-straight appearance on the second team, while Henze was honorable mention last year.

GMG’s Maesa Groth was also selected to the second team.

All three teams had an honorable mention as well, with Kassie Robinson from Colo-NESCO, Zoe Duncan from GMG and Carlee Feisel from North Tama earning the selection.
