SPORTS SHORTS: Emley to lead Hawkeye shooting team

Troy Emley

WATERLOO — Troy Emley has been hired to lead the Hawkeye Community College sports shooting program as the new head coach. He replaces Kevin Boldt, who retired at the end of the spring 2017 season.

Emley founded the Central Iowa Straight Shooters in 2013. He was head coach and executive director for the organization until 2016, when he began to focus solely on the executive director role. He was previously senior minister at First Christian Church in Central City, Neb. Emley was involved with hunting and shooting at a young age and as a minister fell in love with the sport while shooting with members of his congregation. He was transferred to Liscomb in 2012.

He has an associate degree in gunsmith technology from Iowa Valley Community College and a bachelor’s degree in pastoral ministries from Nebraska Christian College. He has experience coaching football, baseball and sports shooting at the high school level, and has multiple shotgun coaching certifications. He and his wife, Jordan, live in Conrad and have three children.

Buttenham granted medical waiver

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior women’s basketball player Christina Buttenham has been granted a medical noncounter waiver by the Big Ten Conference, head coach Lisa Bluder announced Thursday.

Buttenham appeared in 26 games last season with four starts, averaging 3.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 13.7 minutes per game. The Hamilton, Ontario, native suffered a concussion in February. She will remain with the team providing support off the court for the 2017-18 season as she finishes her degree.

“Injuries are an uncontrollable and unfortunate part of the game of basketball, but with the national discussions and information that we now have about concussions, we feel that Christina’s long-term well-being is more important than a few more months on the basketball court,” Bluder said. “We are glad that Christina will remain a part of our program from the sidelines as she completes her degree.”
