Trojans tab quartet on all-district first team

The 2017 all-district baseball teams have been announced, and headlining the area first-team selections were four seniors from the West Marshall team that made it to the Class 2A substate finals.

Trojan seniors Ross Randall, Cody Mead, Chandler Sponseller and David Disney all received first-team honors in the Central District. Randall also received Most Outstanding Player honors for the North Iowa Cedar League West Division this season.

Joining the West Marshall quartet on the first team are a pair of BCLUW juniors: Troy Dolphin and Brad Barkema. This was Barkema and Dolphin’s second total first-team nod, as Barkema earned that honor in 1A last year and Dolphin in 2015. Both have earned three total all-district selections in their careers.

Two more Trojans made the second team, as sophomore Cameron Bannister and junior Alex Dickey each earned their first all-district selections of their career. The dynamic junior duo of Justin Ridout and Zane Johnson from East Marshall also were selected to the second team.

Four total area athletes were selected to the 1A Central first team, led by a trio of North Tama players.

Seniors Will Earley, Cael Kopriva and Cameron Hoeg represent the Redhawks on the first team, while juniors Matthew Hill and Sean Cutler from Colo-NESCO also were given first-team honors. Hoeg has been selected to the first team each of the last four years, while Kopriva earned his second first-team honor and fourth total all-district nod. Earley was also a second-team selection in 2016, while Hill was a second-team player in 2015.

Three AGWSR athletes made the second team — freshman Luke Starr and juniors Matt Pfaltzgraff and Liam Stubbe — and they were joined by North Tama senior Joe Earley. This was the second-straight second-team selection for Stubbe.

One area player was featured on the 4A teams, as Marshalltown junior Nate Vance received a second-team selection in the North Central District. This was Vance’s second all-district honor, adding to his first-team nod last season.
