Bobcats fade at Fort Dodge
Marshalltown’s fast start foiled as Dodgers get sweep
FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team mustered up enough momentum to make a game of it, but the Bobcats ran out of gas by the time Fort Dodge had regained complete control.
Dodgers senior Shareece Smith scored a career-high 21 points to help Fort Dodge win for the first time since the last time it faced the Bobcats, beating Marshalltown 53-38 in Tuesday’s CIML Iowa Conference clash.
MHS (1-11, 0-5) got out to an early 4-0 lead but trailed 16-7 after the opening period. The Bobcats retaliated with a 6-2 scoring advantage in the second quarter to close within five, 18-13, at halftime.
The rest went the Dodgers’ way, as Fort Dodge fired out of the break for a 26-4 third-quarter edge. Marshalltown, trailing 44-17, scored more points in the fourth period (21) than it had prior to the final frame.
Bobcat sophomore Erica Johnson collected a career-high 17 points, scoring 13 of them in the second half thanks to a 7-for-7 performance from the free-throw line. Classmate Madi Finch finished with a season-best 11 points.
Grace Metzger added six points and Kyra Feldman added four, as the aforementioned quartet accounted for all of Marshalltown’s points.
Assisting Smith’s effort for Fort Dodge (3-9, 2-3) was Beth Murman, who had 14 points, and Raya Love, who added 11. The Dodgers snapped their five-game losing streak by completing the season sweep of Marshalltown, though not as convincingly as their 55-25 triumph Dec. 8 inside the Roundhouse.
Marshalltown’s six-game road swing closes with three games in the next seven days. The Bobcats go to Class 5A No. 6 Dowling Catholic on Friday, No. 2 Cedar Falls on Saturday, and then Ames next Tuesday.
