SPORTS SHORTS: Royals lock down ISC South crown

BAXTER — The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team won an Iowa Star Conference South Division tilt over Baxter in overtime on Tuesday, 58-55.

With the win, the Royals (12-6, 9-1) clinched the outright Iowa Star South title. Matthew Hill finished with a game-high 27 points to lead Colo-NESCO, while Sean Cutler had 13 and Jacob Clatt had 10.

Will Clapper led the Bolts (10-8, 8-2) with 20 points, followed by Cole Damman with 14 and Travis Lindemoen with 12.

Coberley’s season-high helps Trojans

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys basketball team earned an NICL West Division win over BCLUW on Tuesday, 79-50.

Beau Coberley had a season-high 20 points to lead the Trojans (13-4, 9-2), while Peyton Pope finished with 15 points and Joe Halverson finished just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Comets (3-15, 1-10) were led by Logan Mann with 19 points, followed by Jack Garber with 11.

Rewoldt’s double-double leads Tigers

ACKLEY — Kevin Rewoldt’s double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds helped the South Hardin boys’ basketball team fend off AGWSR for a 54-43 victory in their NICL West Division clash here Tuesday night.

Jacob Vander Wilt and Cade Spieker added 13 points apiece for the Tigers (8-10, 5-6). Kaleb Roling pitched in with six points as South Hardin ended a five-game losing skid that included three losses in a row to ranked teams.

Luke Starr helped AGWSR stage a second-half comeback, leading all players with 20 points. Alex Hames added 10 points and three steals, and Tanner Weichers contributed seven points for the Cougars (8-12, 3-9).

Redhawks complete sweep of GMG

GARWIN — The North Tama boys basketball team won its second-straight Iowa Star Conference South Division game on Tuesday by beating GMG, 71-64.

The Redhawks (7-11, 4-6) were led by Lance Zobel with 23 points, while Hale Hulme had 18.

Hunter Smoldt led the Wolverines (7-10, 3-7) with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Aaron Fleming had 16.

No. 7 Cougars double up South Hardin

ACKLEY — The Class 1A No. 7 AGWSR girls’ basketball team wrapped up second place in the NICL West Division with a 68-34 triumph over visiting South Hardin on Tuesday night.

The Cougars (18-2, 10-2) can get a share of the division title if South Hardin (3-15, 2-9) upsets 2A No. 8 Grundy Center on Friday night in Eldora.

Mandy Willems led all players with 23 points, making four 3-pointers to go with six steals lead AGWSR. The Cougars jumped out to a 21-2 first-quarter advantage and a 38-10 halftime edge.

Taryan Barrick pitched in with 14 points and Aubrie Fisher had 11 points and seven rebounds for AGWSR, which closes the regular season Monday night at Hudson.

Kiera Anderson led South Hardin with eight points and seven rebounds. Paige Harrell pitched in with five points in the team’s third-straight loss. The Tigers travel to face Don Bosco on Thursday before hosting Grundy Center on Friday.

Gradwell gets 29 as Trojans top Comets

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls basketball team won an NICL West Division meeting over BCLUW at home on Tuesday, 65-27.

The Trojans (15-4, 8-3) were led by Isabelle Gradwell with 29 points and seven rebounds, followed by Karlyn Snider with 12 points and Kayla Cripps with 10.

Madison Ubben led the Comets (8-11, 3-8) with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Easton Swanson also had nine boards and Lauren Anderson finished with six points.

Vaske’s 32 points powers GMG to win

GARWIN — McKensie Vaske poured in a game-high 32 points to lead the GMG girls’ basketball team to a 60-52 win over North Tama in both teams’ Iowa Star Conference South Division finale here Tuesday night.

Zoe Duncan chipped in 10 points and Kelsey Vaverka added seven more for the Wolverines (8-10, 5-6), who host Class 1A No. 11 Janesville on Friday night.

Takoa Kopriva led North Tama with 17 points. Olivia Schrier added 13 points and Hope Brubaker scored 10 more for the Redhawks (2-17, 1-10), who lost their fourth-straight. North Tama goes to No. 9 Montezuma on Thursday and rounds out the regular season Friday by hosting Dunkerton.

Colo-NESCO girls clobber Baxter

BAXTER — The Colo-NESCO girls basketball team maintained its undefeated record in the Iowa Star Conference South Division on Tuesday by downing Baxter, 69-32.

Rylee Purvis scored a career-high 25 points for the Royals (16-3, 10-0) along with five rebounds, while Molly Barten 14 points.

Jordynn Wesselink had 11 points to lead the Bolts (3-15, 2-8).
