DES MOINES — Saturday was the final day of competition in the 109th running of the Drake Relays, and former South Hardin High School standout Tim Rose added another piece of hardware to his trophy case.

After winning the men’s unseeded 1,500-meter race on Thursday, Rose anchored the Northwestern College distance medley relay team to a victory on Saturday. The Red Raiders finished with a time of 10 minutes, 9.57 seconds to win by a six-second margin over Morningside College.

Former GMG athlete Bryce Newcomb was also in action on the final day, competing individually in the long jump as well as running in the 4×400 for the University of Northern Iowa.

The Panthers placed fifth in the 4×400, with Newcomb running the lead leg. Teamed with Sven Van Den Bergh, Jojo Frost and Corey Hart, Newcomb and the Panthers combined on a time of 3:10.21.

In the long jump, the junior Newcomb placed 15th with a leap of 22 feet, 1 inch.
