MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys soccer team continued its strong start to the season on Friday with a 4-2 victory over CIML Iowa Conference foe Mason City.

All of the scoring for the Bobcats (4-2, 2-0) came in the first half, with Brandon Ordaz, Jose Torres, Ian Hernandez and Rene Hernandez all finding the back of the net. Marshalltown had 17 total shots in the win.

“Once again the boys dominated control of the game and possession,” head coach Chris Fuchsen said.

Jesus Muñoz had a good effort between the posts for MHS as well, going all 80 minutes allowing just the two goals and recording eight saves. Fuchsen said the two goals weren’t the fault of his goalie, but more on the rest of his team losing a bit of focus.

Next up, the Bobcats return home after a five-game road trip to take on Urbandale, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Leonard Cole Field.

Bobcat girls score first but fall to Mohawks

The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team got its first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Mason City.

The Bobcats led 1-0 before Mason City scored a pair of unanswered goals for a 2-1 win in Friday’s CIML Iowa Conference match at Leonard Cole Field.

After a scoreless first half, Jade Tejada converted a cross pass from Naomi Boland to give the Bobcats (0-5, 0-2) a 1-0 lead. The visiting Mohawks (1-1, 1-0) countered with two tallies, including a penalty kick with two minutes left in the match.

Tejada’s goal was the first of the season for the Bobcats, who go on the road to face Urbandale on Tuesday night.
