SPORTS SHORTS: South Hardin girls tennis tops Union

LA PORTE CITY — The South Hardin girls tennis team started its season off right on Tuesday with a victory over Union Community, 5-4.

The Tigers (1-0) finished the singles sets tied with the Knights at 3-all, but they won two out of three of the doubles matches to take the meet.

Hailey Teske had the best showing of the day for South Hardin, beating Morgan Niebergall at No. 3 singles, 8-2. Danae Nelson also started strong at No. 1 singles, defeating Meghan Klein 8-3.

In the doubles matches, Blaze Harms and Teske won at No. 2 doubles and Isabelle Sisson and Sarah England won at No. 3 doubles to secure the victory.

STC girls tennis falls to Oskaloosa

TAMA — The South Tama County girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday when it fell to Oskaloosa 8-1.

The No. 2 doubles team of Zoee Buffalo and Anna Glendy had the lone win of the day for the Trojans (1-1), as they took out Jori VandenBerg and Gracie Glasgow 10-5.

Brie Nelson and Abrielle Morgan played close with Macy Scharff and Josie Bunnell at No. 1 doubles, falling 10-7, and Abigail Buffalo and Daniela Contreras lost a tight one to Ashley Drost and Jolie Yang at No. 3 doubles, 10-6.

Zoee Buffalo had the closest match in singles, losing to VandenBerg 10-6 at No. 3 singles.

STC/EM girls defeat West Delaware

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall girls soccer team earned its first win of the year by taking out West Delaware on Monday, 3-1.

Sadie Smith was on fire for the Trojans (1-1) as she turned in a hat trick with three goals in the victory against the Hawks (0-2).

Trojan boys earn victory over Hawks

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall boys soccer team opened up its road schedule on Monday with a 1-0 victory over West Delaware.

The Trojans (1-1) had nine total shots on goal, with Joel Medina finding the back of the net for his first goal of the year. Medina had five total shots on goal, while Roger Flores had two.

Jake Wilkerson got the full-game shutout as goalkeeper and he recorded one save.
