Comets take 2nd, earn team qualification

NASHUA — The BCLUW girls golf team is heading back to the state championships next week after placing second with a score of 390 at the Class 1A Region 3 tournament at Nashua Town & Country Club on Monday.

Comets senior Lauren Anderson was the highest placer on the day, earning an individual qualification by shooting a 91 and placing sixth in the tournament.

Lili Wilson was the next-highest BCLUW placer, taking 12th with a 98, while twins Mackenzie and Madison Trinkle placed 17th and 18th respectively with a 100 and 101 respectively.

Grundy Center finished just behind BCLUW with a team score of 398 to place third. While the Spartans didn’t earn a team qualification, sophomore Frannie Brown will be representing her squad after placing seventh with a 93 to become an individual qualifier.

The lowest score of the day for area competitors came from Claire Schafer from North Tama, who took runner-up honors in the meet with an 87.

BCLUW, Schafer and Brown will now represent their squads next week at the 1A state tournament at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course, starting next Tuesday.

West Marshall finished off its season by taking fifth at the 2A Region 3 tournament at Garner Country Club with a team score of 410, while South Tama County placed fifth at the 3A Region 3 tournament at Oakland Acres Golf Course in Grinnell with a team score of 412.
