On Tuesday afternoon the Marshalltown girls golf team hosted Mason City at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course for their final home CIML Iowa Conference dual of the season.

Since it was senior night, it was only fitting that the Bobcat seniors show out, and the four counting scores for MHS in their 185-213 victory over the Mohawks all came from senior players.

Kassy Vest once again led the Bobcats as the meet medalist, shooting a 43 on the front nine of the Legion, while Bella Russell finished with a 46 and Emily Hass and Ciara Feldman each shot a 48 to round out the counting scores.

“This senior class has come an awfully long way since their freshman year,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said. “I can honestly say they’ve improved more than any group I’ve coached and that’s a testament to their hard work and commitment to doing things the right way. We’ve made a lot of great memories over that time, but I’m hoping they can add a few more special ones before the end of the year.”

Not to be outdone, freshman Kyra Feldman represented the future of the program with a 49, just one stroke away from a counting score, and sophomore Emma Younkin had a 61.

“We had a goal of getting four scores in the 40’s, so to get five was an added bonus,” Johnson said.

It wasn’t an easy day for golf either, as the girls had to deal with a strong wind out of the southwest, but Johnson said the team handled the poor conditions well.

“We battled the wind early on during the opening holes, especially as No. 1 was playing right into the teeth of it,” Johnson said. “We made the most of the downwind holes and our girls we’re hitting some of the longest drives they’ve ever had at Legion on holes #3 and #4. Some even had wedges and 9 irons into the par 5 third on their second shot.”

With the postseason quickly approaching, the Bobcats now are done with dual meets and will play tournaments the rest of the way out.

“We still need to clean up some of our play around the greens. We’re still giving away too many shots from 100 yards and in,” Johnson said. “We’re looking forward to the next three meets which are all 18 holes as we begin to prepare in earnest for the final stretch of the season.”
