SPORTS SHORTS: McIlrath powers Mustangs past Denver

DENVER — The Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team earned another win on the road on Friday over Denver, 12-0 in four innings.

Reagan McIlrath was the star for the Mustangs (3-0), pitching a perfect game with seven strikeouts on the mound and knocking in seven RBIs on a 2-for-2 line at the plate. Both of McIlrath’s hits were home runs, one a grand slam and one a three-run dinger.

Melinda Puumala finished 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored against the Cyclones (0-1), while Ellen Hungerford went 1-for-2 with two trips across home plate.

Up next the Mustangs head to Williamsburg for a tournament today, starting at 9 a.m.

West Marshall puts away Pirates 10-1

HUDSON — The West Marshall baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season well on Friday with a win over Hudson on the road, 10-1.

Parker Hulbert pitched a complete game for the Trojans (3-1), allowing one run off one hit while walking four and striking out eight.

Jake Tollefson went 2-for-3 at the plate against the Pirates (1-3) with a double, a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Cameron Bannister also was effective with the bat, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored.

West Marshall next heads to Ackley on Tuesday to face off with AGWSR in both team’s NICL West Division opener.

Grinnell gets past Mustang baseball

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team suffered a home loss to Grinnell on Friday night, 14-7 in five innings, called because of weather.

Colton Wiese got the loss on the mound for the Mustangs (1-4), going 2 2/3 innings with seven hits and seven earned runs while striking out two and walking five.

Zane Johnson went 2-for-2 at the plate with a solo home run against the Tigers (4-0), while Austin Elliot went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

East Marshall next hosts Nevada on Tuesday, looking to snap a four-game losing streak.

North Tama knocks out Baxter baseball

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team earned a win in Iowa Star Conference South Division over Baxter on Friday, 9-1.

Hale Hulme got the start on the mound for the Redhawks (2-1, 2-0), going 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run and run hit while striking out 11 Bolts (0-3).

Gabe Kopriva went 2-for-3 at the plate for North Tama with two runs scored and an RBI, while Hulme went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Next up the Redhawks travel to Beaman to play in BCLUW’s Memorial Day tournament, starting at 9 a.m.
