SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs stave off South Hardin, 3-1

ELDORA — The East Marshall baseball team won its third-straight NICL West Division game on Friday by taking a victory over South Hardin, 3-1.

The Mustangs (8-14, 6-6) were tied with the Tigers (2-12, 2-9) at 1-1 heading to the sixth inning, but East Marshall plated two runs to take over the lead.

Zach Jacobson picked up the win for the Mustangs, going 5 1/3 innings while allowing two hits and one run and striking out four. He also had two RBIs in the win, sending Zane Johnson home in the first inning after Johnson started the game with a triple, and driving in one of the two runs in the sixth.

Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, while Tyler DeBondt also went 2-for-3. Wesley Hamor picked up the save by pitching 1 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball.

Donte Dolash took the loss for South Hardin.

East Marshall starts the final week of the regular season with a meeting against Belle Plaine on Monday, while the Tigers face Aplington-Parkersburg the same night.

Keller helps Comets stump Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER — The BCLUW baseball team ended a two-game slide on Friday with a win over NICL West Division foe Grundy Center on Friday, 10-0 in six innings.

Calob Keller picked up the win for the Comets (11-11, 8-2), going a complete game while allowing four hits and striking out three and walking three.

Tanner Appel took the loss for the Spartans (2-18, 1-10).

Troy Dolphin had a single and a triple for BCLUW, while Blake Mann had a single and a double and Jack Garber had two singles and three RBIs.

The Comets will be back in action on Monday when it takes AGWSR on the road, and a win secures at least a share of the NICL West title.

BCLUW tops Spartans in 9 innings, 6-4

GRUNDY CENTER — The BCLUW softball team outlasted NICL West Division opponent Grundy Center on Friday for a 6-4 victory in nine innings.

The Comets (19-12, 8-4) and Spartans (11-12, 4-8) were knotted up at 3-3 after seven innings, then both teams scored once in the eighth before BCLUW plated two in the ninth and held Grundy Center scoreless.

Bailey Ashton pitched eight innings for the win, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. Lauren Anderson threw the final inning and allowed no hits or runs to pick up the save.

Emma Beck took the loss for the Spartans, going six innings in relief of starter Landry Luhring. Luhring drove in her sister, Kyah, as the tying run with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Easton Swanson went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the ninth inning that brought in Kennedy Williams, who drove in Parker Scurr with a pinch-hit single.
