Freshmen power MCC past Rams

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Freshmen accounted for four first-half goals and the 19th-ranked Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team scored a 4-0 victory over Anoka-Ramsey CC on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 2-0 thanks to a pair of 4-0 wins north of the border. MCC stomped Carleton College to start the season Friday night in Northfield, Minn., before taking in a Minnesota Twins game on Saturday. Marshalltown completed the trip with another four-goal triumph on Sunday.

Sekou Kromah tallied a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the match with Anoka-Ramsey, and Aleix Viladot made it 3-0 in the 11th minute.

Jiro Atano rounded out the Tigers’ scoring in the 40th minute, and the second half was a scoreless draw.

Gustavo Leal, Rafael Vacas, Leonard Tomasi and Kazuki Kimura were credited with assists on respective MCC goals.

Thirteen of the Tigers’ 25 shots were on goal, and MCC netminder Joel Serrano was not required to make any saves in the shutout victory.

“It was a very good performance for our players,” said MCC head coach Rafael Martinez. “The team was concentrated and ready for the task of playing a good Anoka-Ramsey team.”

“Overall it was the perfect weekend with two good matches against quality opponents that made us better as a team,” Martinez added. “We now look forward to the next challenge.”

The Tigers play their first home game on Tuesday, entertaining Hawkeye Community College at 4 p.m. on the MCC campus.
