Trojans, Rebels still unbeaten in district

NEVADA — West Marshall senior quarterback Cameron Bannister rushed for a career-high 307 yards and the game’s first three touchdowns, lifting the Class 2A No. 5 Trojans to a 35-3 win at Nevada (3-4, 1-2) on Friday night.

Bannister had touchdown runs of 34, 69 and 18 yards while averaging 17 yards per carry on 18 attempts, helping West Marshall (6-1, 3-0) notch its fifth-straight win.

The Trojans took a 28-3 lead into halftime after Brayden Evertson blocked a punt and Brian Morrison scooped it up and scored from 35 yards away. Chase Burr added 68 yards rushing, including a 12-yard touchdown run for the game’s final points coming in the third quarter.

Bannister also was 6-for-11 passing for 86 yards, connecting four times with Jake Tollefson for 53 yards. Burr (23) and Joe Halverson (10) each made one reception.

Burr led the Trojan defense with 10 tackles, David Willis had eight and Evertsen had seven tackles and two quarterback sacks. Bannister intercepted a pair of Nevada passes, too.

West Marshall’s remaining 2A District 7 schedule includes next week’s game at No. 6 Benton Community and a regular-season finale at home against No. 7 Union Community.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 58, Twin Cedars 6

GLADBROOK — Eli Thede turned Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s first touch into a touchdown, returning a punt 45 yards for a score and sparking the Rebels’ 58-6 triumph over Twin Cedars on Friday night.

Thede added a 61-yard touchdown reception to make it 22-0 Rebels on the next-to-last play of the first quarter, and G-R rolled to its fifth-straight 8-Man District 5 victory.

Keagan Giesking had a pick-six and a pair of touchdown runs, while Colton Clark, Jackson Kiburis and Tom Smith each got in on the scoring with touchdown runs for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-2, 5-0), which has outscored district competition 325-28.

The Rebels outgained Twin Cedars (4-4, 3-2) by a 315-111 margin in total yards while recording four takeaways. Clark led G-R with 80 rushing yards on seven carries, while Giesking (54) and Smith (51) each carried five times. Kiburis completed two of only three passing attempts for 75 yards, with Thede (61) and Aiden Wyatt (14) making catches for the Rebels.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck goes on the road to face AGWSR (5-2, 5-0) next Friday in Ackley in a game to decide the district champion.

South Hardin 38, East Marshall 14

ELDORA — The East Marshall football team ended its scoreless streak, but couldn’t get into the ‘W’ column.

The Mustangs fell 38-14 to host South Hardin in Friday’s Class 1A District 6 contest, dropping to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in league play. The host Tigers (3-4, 2-1) took a 20-0 lead into the halftime break and outscored East Marshall 18-14 in the second half as well.

The Mustangs scored their first points since Week 1, as Cole Nauman connected with Eric Ommen for a 27-yard touchdown pass and Noah Bandstra had a 34-yard interception return for another score, but it wasn’t enough to get the season’s first win.

Nauman finished 8-for-15 passing for 69 yards with two interceptions, hooking up with Ommen five times for 57 yards. Bandstra was the Mustangs’ leading rusher with 78 yards on 17 carries, and he led the defense with 11 solo tackles and nine assisted stops.

Ryley Overton added seven solo tackles, six assists and one of the Mustangs’ three fumble recoveries. Caden Stewart and Dane Thompson both recovered fumbles as well.

East Marshall is on the road again next Friday night, traveling to Troy Mills to face North Linn in district play.
