SPORTS SHORTS: Shayok named finalist for Erving Award

AMES — Iowa State senior Marial Shayok has been named one of the five finalists for the 2019 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award.

Shayok is second in the Big 12 Conference averaging 18.7 points per game this season, and he’s scored 20 or more points in 14 games. He is also pulling down 5.2 rebounds and two assists per game.

He is shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 39 percent behind the 3-point line.

Joining Shayok as finalists are Rui Hachimura from Gonzaga, Caleb Martin from Nevada, Admiral Schofield from Tennessee and De’Andre Hunter from Virginia.

The winner of the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame selection committee. Fans are encouraged to visit hoophallawards.com to cast their votes from March 8-29.

Panther Caravan schedule released

CEDAR FALLS — The 2019 University of Northern Iowa Panther Caravan will begin on May 31 in Clear Lake and will make stops in six cities as it makes its way around the state, culminating in a main street event in Cedar Falls on May 22.

The Panthers won’t just be touring Iowa though, as the Caravan will also appear at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., on May 14.

The Panther Caravan provides the opportunity for UNI fans to socialize with and hear from Panther coaches, University President Mark Nook, UNI Director of Athletics David Harris and other special guests.

Also on the stop schedule are The Hall in West Des Moines on May 15 and the Cedar Ridge Winery in Swisher on May 21. All events for the Caravan will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
