SPORTS SHORTS: GC/G-R girls rout Grand View Christian

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 13 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls basketball team beat Grand View Christian on Friday night, 10-0 in 55 minutes.

Jacque Kuester had a hat trick with three goals for the Spartans (2-0) and she tacked on an assist. Katie Clark, Taylor Gienger, Reece Gordan, Abby Hamann, Sydney Matthews, Maddie McMartin and Rachel Scarf all scored one goal.

Carson Hamann played 30 minutes as the goalkeeper without allowing a score and Makenzie Martens played 25 scoreless minutes with one save.

GC/G-R next travels to Alburnett to take on Cedar Valley Christian at the Martin Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Mustangs place 4th in Pirate Relays

HUDSON — The East Marshall boys track and field team placed fourth in Hudson’s Pirate Relays on Friday with 97 points.

The Mustangs got four event wins on the evening, three individually and one as a relay team.

Cade Curphy took first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 12.06 seconds, Hunter Vilez was the top mark in the discus with a distance of 137 feet, 6 inches, and Gage Hulin won the long jump with a vault of 20-9 3/4. The distance medley relay also finished in first with a time of 3:47.52.

Austin Elliott finished in second in the 200 by running a 24.24, and the 4×800 and sprint medley relays both also placed second for East Marshall.

Comets 3rd at South Hardin Invite

ELDORA — The BCLUW girls track and field team finished third out of nine teams at the South Hardin Invite on Friday with 104 points.

Lizzie Garber won the 100-meter hurdles for the Comets with a time of 17.08 seconds, and Kenna Paxson was fourth in that race with an 18.47. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kiersten Kruse, Payton Pekarek, Paxson and Garber also took first with a time of 1:11.26, more than eight seconds faster than second place.

Garber also finished second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 8 inches, and Kruse followed in third with a jump of 4-4. Katie Thompson placed fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 and the 4×100 team of Kruse, Kaylee Grant, Dahlia Gardiner and Thompson and the 4×200 team of Gardiner, Grant, Pekarek and Fiona Spiecher both finished in second.

West Marshall was fourth on the team standings with 92 points. Renae Schaper was the point leader after finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet and third in the discus with a toss of 105 feet, both of which were season highs.

Kayla Cripps took fourth in the 200 with a time of 27.97 and the 4×800 team of Lily Buck, Dresden Eldridge, Avery Randall and Grace Girard finished in third with a time of 11:18.13.

GMG was ninth with 14 team points. The 4×800 team of Angel Schewe, Mable Dieleman, Maesa Groth and Zoe Duncan were fourth with a time of 11:24.08, and the 4×400 team of Belle Duncan, Schewe, Dieleman and Zoe Duncan took sixth with a 4:51.48.

STC/EM girls soccer falls to Grinnell

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall girls soccer team lost a home game to Grinnell on Thursday, 3-1.

Olivia Terrones had the only goal for the Trojans, scoring on one of her three shot attempts. Maryanne Marks played all 80 minutes between the posts, allowing three goals and saving seven shots.

Trojan golfers sweep home triangular

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls and boys golf teams swept triangulars in their home opening meet Friday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, beating East Marshall and Baxter.

The Trojan girls scored a 228 team total to defeat East Marshall (237) and Baxter (242), led by runner-up medalist Karisa Blocker’s 52.

Jaiden Hart shot a 56 for West Marshall, Whitney Edler added a 58 and Kalyn Polley rounded out the team score with her 62.

East Marshall’s Jazy Leavy was meet medalist with her round of 50, Kayla Mommer came in with a 55, Rachael McAnulty added a 61 and Kennedy Boliver finished with a 71.

On the boys’ side, West Marshall swept the hardware as Caleb Keigan carded a medalist round of 47 and Conley Petermeier lost the cardback to take runner-up to his teammate with the same score as the Trojans’ 193 outlasted East Marshall’s 205 and Baxter’s 221.

Will Dawley added a 49 and Jorgen Sogge shot 50 to round out the Trojans’ team scoring.

East Marshall was led by matching 48s for Brayden Fahrni and Eric Ommen. Ethan Espenscheid shot a 54 and Seth Freese finished with a 55.

Austin Good led Baxter with a 48.

GC/G-R boys tennis topples Go-Hawks

WAVERLY — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ tennis team toppled host Waverly-Shell Rock 6-3 in Thursday’s season-opening dual meet.

The Spartans won four of six singles matches to take control early, getting an additional two victories in doubles play to seal the win.

Cale Hendricks, Landon Graham, Dane Zinkula and Braiden Sawyer each won their singles matches in straight sets. Graham and Zinkula combined for a three-set triumph at No. 2 doubles, beating Ryan Sand and Sal Damerreddi 7-5, 2-6, (10-3), while Sawyer and Sloan Klar captured another three-setter for the Spartans at No. 3 doubles, edging Dillon Folkerts and Isaac Becker 6-1, 3-6, (10-8).

Mustang golfers split with Tigers

ELDORA — The East Marshall boys golf team picked up an NICL West Division win on Thursday night, beating South Hardin 204-243 at Pine Lake Country Club.

Brayden Fahrni captured medalist honors for the Mustangs with his round of 42. South Hardin’s Dalton Lake earned runner-up with a 47, but was the only Tiger to score under 58.

East Marshall’s remaining team score came from a 51 for Seth Freese, a 54 from Eric Ommen and a 57 by Ethan Espenscheid.

The East Marshall girls were last in a triangular. Hampton-Dumont shot 244, South Hardin carded 270 and the Mustangs finished at 282. Kayla Mommer led East Marshall with a 57 and Jazy Leavy added a 59.
