MCC softball drops weekend twinbills

The Marshalltown Community College softball team finished its regular season with four-straight losses on Sunday and Monday.

In a doubleheader at Indian Hills on Sunday, the Tigers fell 23-0 in game one and 12-4 in game two. It was a similar showing against Southeastern at home on Monday, where MCC dropped the first game, 20-4, and the second 24-3.

The Tigers (11-30) only managed four hits in the first loss to the Warriors while they gave up 18 hits and committed three errors. Kylee Swan finished 1-for-2 in the loss, while Saydee Terrell, Ashley Tennant and Nicolette Dabbs all were 1-for-3, with Dabbs also recording a steal. Terrell was the losing pitcher after allowing 18 hits and 12 earned runs, including four home runs. Former West Marshall standout Brooke Snyder hit two of those four homers for the Warriors, as she went 4-for-5 with seven total RBIs.

Game two against Indian Hills saw a better offensive and defensive effort, but it still wasn’t enough to make the game go past five innings. MCC actually outhit the Warriors 14-10 in the loss, it just couldn’t capitalize on scoring chances. Dabbs was 3-for-3 with a double, while Swan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and AnnaMarie Armstrong was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tennant took the loss after giving up 11 hits and 11 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

The hitting woes showed themselves again in game one against the Blackhawks, as MCC was outhit 16-3 on its way to a 20-4 loss. Kaylee Hanks was the only one feeling it at the plate, as she went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Dabbs also had a solo homer. Tennant was the losing pitcher again with 15 hits allowed and 11 earned runs.

Game two saw more hits from the Tigers but less runs, as they were outhit 21-8 but lost 24-3. All eight hits came from eight different plays, with Tennant and Dabbs both hitting solo home runs.

Marshalltown will host the NJCAA Division I Region XI Tournament starting on Friday, where the Tigers will play Indian Hills in the opening game at 10 a.m.
