SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats bounced by ranked opponents

The Marshalltown girls soccer team lost back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday, falling to Class 1A No. 13 Waterloo Columbus on Monday, 2-0, and 3A No. 3 West Des Moines Valley on Tuesday, 10-0.

Against the Sailors, Anna DiIorio and Madison Schumacher both had shots on goal but weren’t able to convert. Goalkeeper Avygail Smith played all 80 minutes between the posts and had 17 saves for the Bobcats (1-7).

Against the Tigers, Smith and Damaris Garcia both allowed five goals, with Smith recording 10 saves and Garcia seven. No MHS girl attempted a shot against the Valley.

The Bobcats head to Des Moines East for their next match at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

STC boys soccer snaps back into shape

MOUNT VERNON — The South Tama County boys soccer team bounced back from a close loss to Vinton-Shellsburg with a 10-0 win over WaMaC Conference foe Mount Vernon on Tuesday.

Jonathan Castrejon, who was held scoreless in the previous game, scored four goals and recorded two assists for the Trojans (6-3). Castrejon is tied for third in Class 1A in scoring with 22 goals on the year, and his 52 total points is also third in the class.

Jeffrey Fuentes also had a multi-score game with two goals, while Osmar Galvez had a goal and four assists. Guillermo Garcia played 55 scoreless minutes in goal and recorded six saves.

STC is back on the pitch today with a home game against Maquoketa starting at 4:30 p.m.

STC/EM girls downed by Mustangs

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall girls soccer team lost a WaMaC Conference game to Class 2A No. 15 Mount Vernon on Tuesday, 9-1.

Olivia Terrones had the lone goal for the Trojans (2-8), scoring on her only shot on goal. MaryAnne Marks played the complete game as the goalkeeper, allowing nine goals and saving seven.

Anna Hoffman scored four of the nine goals for the Mustangs, while Maia Bentley had two goals and two assists.

STC is back in action today with a game at Maquoketa, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Third-straight loss for GC/G-R girls

WAVERLY — The Class 1A No. 9 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer team lost its third-straight game on Tuesday after falling to Class 2A No. 7 Waverly-Shell Rock, 10-0 in 70 minutes.

The Rebels (6-3) only managed two total shots, with Maddie McMartin and Rachel Scarf both having a shot on goal. Carsen Hamann played the first 60 minutes between the posts but allowed eight goals compared to nine saves.

Kenzie Roling had four goals and an assist for the Go-Hawks, and Camryn Grawe had three goals and an assist.

GC/G-R will try to get off the schneid when it plays in the Vinton-Shellsburg tournament on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

Joens invited to USA Basketball trials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Iowa State freshman guard Ashley Joens was selected to participate in the 2019 USA Women’s U19 World Cup Team trials. Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee.

Joens was among 30 athletes to receive an invite. Trials to select the 12-member team will be held May 16-19 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Training camp will follow July 5-19, with the U19 World Cup competition taking place July 20-28 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Joens captured gold in the 2018 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship, where she was the USA’s second-leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals.
