Abby Nolte doubled her season home run total and the Des Moines Hoover softball team doubled up on Marshalltown, beating the Bobcats 14-2 in six innings and 16-0 in four innings in Thursday’s cross-CIML doubleheader at the MHS diamond.

Nolte homered once in the first game and twice in the nightcap, helping Hoover (9-6) collect its seventh win in its last eight games.

Marshalltown (5-19) came up with nine hits in the opening game but stranded eight runners on base, and the same number of ducks were left on the pond in the second game, too.

Hoover led 5-0 before MHS got on the board in the opener, as Autumn Finch reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored after back-to-back walks to Emma McWherter and Jadyn Palmer loaded the bases before Kyra Feldman singled.

Sophie Younkin led off the fifth with a double and later scored.

Alyvia Chadderdon and Maggie Augustine both singled to start the bottom of the sixth, but both baserunners were thrown out attempting to advance.

Younkin, Feldman and Chadderdon each had two hits for the Bobcats. Avery Mull got the loss in the circle, allowing five runs — two earned — on four hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings. Ella Grife was charged with nine runs in the top of the sixth, though none of them were earned because of errors. Nolte hit a grand slam in the inning.

In the second game, Nolte went 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI single, a two-run homer and another grand slam for six RBIs in all as the Huskies rolled to a 16-0, four-inning rout.

Finch, Palmer, Grife, Chadderdon and Mull each accounted for one of the Bobcats’ five singles, while Kailee Pollard took the loss in the circle. She surrendered 12 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks.

Marshalltown is back in action today in the Bobcat Classic at the Marshalltown Girls Softball Association diamonds. MHS meets Des Moines Roosevelt at 1:30 p.m. and Colfax-Mingo at 5 p.m., and on Saturday the Bobcats face off with Lynnville-Sully at 10 a.m. and Lisbon at 11:45 a.m.
