SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs take care of Spartan softball

GRUNDY CENTER — Reagan McIlrath hit a two-run homer and Kodie Hoskey spun a one-hit shutout as the Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball team defeated Grundy Center 11-0 in six innings worth of NICL West Division softball here Monday.

McIlrath finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a dinger and three RBIs as the Mustangs (8-3, 1-1) got their first conference win in convincing fashion. Melinda Puumala, Maria Rasmusson, Hannah Birks and Kayla Mommer had two hits apiece for East Marshall, which scored at least once in five of six at-bats.

Hoskey, meanwhile, struck out six and did not walk a batter, allowing just a Jessica Ayers single.

Megan Beck took the loss in the circle for Grundy Center (3-2, 1-1), allowing 13 hits and three earned runs. She struck out four and walked none.

BCLUW blasts AGWSR in ranked battle

ACKLEY — The Class 1A No. 13 BCLUW softball team scored nine runs in the first half inning on its way to a 16-2 rout of No. 5 AGWSR in Monday’s NICL West Division showdown between ranked teams.

The Comets (8-3, 3-0) added another six tallies in the top of the fifth to finish off the Cougars (6-2, 2-1) convincingly.

Kiersten Kruse went 2-for-2 with five RBIs to lead the BCLUW bats, highlighted by a bases-clearing double with her second at-bat of the top of the first inning. Cate Nason was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Olivia Hughes was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in support of pitcher Bailey Ashton, who allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out four.

Carrinton Hunt and Rachel Sicard both had two hits for AGWSR.

West Marshall outlasts Wolverines

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall softball team endured the rain to rake in its second-straight win, beating Dike-New Hartford 6-4 in Monday’s cross-NICL contest.

Renae Schaper had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while Avery Randall had two doubles and two RBIs to pace the Trojan offense. Karisa Blocker added a double and winning pitcher Loran Nicholson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Nicholson struck out four and walked four in the complete-game victory, allowing three earned runs on nine hits.

Cougars outscore Comet baseball 14-9

ACKLEY — The BCLUW baseball team racked up 15 hits but it wasn’t enough to overcome seven errors as the Comets fell 14-9 to AGWSR on Monday night.

The Cougars (1-2, 1-1) got their first win in the process, capitalizing on the Comets’ defensive generosity. BCLUW (0-5, 0-3) led 9-4 before AGWSR scored eight times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Noah Gallentine led BCLUW with four hits and three runs scored, while Ray Callaway had three singles and two RBIs. Koty Kruse and Jack Garber both had two singles and scored three times, while Mason Yantis had two hits and two RBIs.

Wyatt Benning got the win for AGWSR in relief, striking out five and walking two in 3 1/3 innings. Colton Keller surrendered 10 runs in two innings in relief of Callaway, suffering the loss.
