Davis, MHS win Joe August Invite

Cole Davis made the most of his final home meet as a Marshalltown High School golfer, matching his career-best round to lead the Bobcats to their fourth-straight Joe August Invite team title on Friday at Elmwood Country Club.

Davis, a senior, carded a 5-under-par round of 65 — good enough to tie the score he shot as a freshman at the same event in 2016 — to earn medalist honors with the second-best round of fall golf in Bobcat history. He was the third and is now the fourth MHS golfer to shoot 65, which he did when Nate Vance tallied a program-record 63 during the 2016 Joe August Invite.

Sophomore Grant Greazel joined the 60s club with his 1-under 69 to take third place, Mason Reid shot 76 to place 10th and Colin Schmit rounded out the team score with an 80 as the Bobcats totaled 290 to win by a comfortable eight-stroke margin ahead of Ottumwa.

“Prior to 2016 we’d gone a full decade without winning the Joe August, so to take the title for the fourth-straight year is something that means an awful lot,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “Our guys love Elmwood and most of them have grown up out there, so it’s a special day when they can perform like they did on their home turf.”

Five of the seven lowest rounds of golf in Marshalltown High School history have come in the Joe August Invite, and three of them (65, 65, 66) belong to Davis. He had seven birdies — six of them on par-4s — to help atone for one double bogey, the only flaw on his scorecard being that 5 on the par-3 12th hole. He birdied Nos. 2, 4, 5, 10, 13, 17 and 18.

“What a way for Cole Davis to go out in his final round at Elmwood as a Bobcat,” said Johnson. “He was absolutely dialed in with his ball-striking and I could tell early on in his round that it had the potential to be an outstanding round.”

Greazel carded the 27th sub-70 round in Bobcat history by banking four birdies to counter three bogeys, highlighted by a long putt on the par-4 15th according to Johnson.

“It was awesome for Grant Greazel to be able to add his name to the 60s club in Bobcat golf,” Johnson said. “For most of the day he was hanging around even-par and drained a huge curler for birdie on No. 15 that was probably the best putt he’s hit all year.”

Reid returned to the lineup after withdrawing from the Bobcats’ last event because of a back injury. Though he was less than 100 percent, according to Johnson, Reid came up by big turning in a 76 that was good for 10th place overall and helped the Bobcats run their Joe August win streak to four.

Owen Chaloupek shot an 86 and Drake Polley added an 87 to round out the Bobcats’ varsity lineup.

The Marshalltown junior varsity contingent took 10th out of 11 scoring teams, led by Cael Sandvick’s 84.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday with a trip to Beaver Hills Country Club for the Cedar Falls Invite.
