SPORTS SHORTS: UNI overtakes Northern Colorado in OT
CEDAR FALLS — Austin Phyfe scored at the basket twice as the unbeaten Northern Iowa men’s basketball team outscored Northern Colorado 9-2 in the final two minutes of overtime to pull out a 77-72 non-conference victory Saturday at the McLeod Center.
Northern Colorado’s Bodie Hume hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation to forge a 65-65 tie and force the extra period.
Spencer Haldeman hit all three of his long-range attempts and finished with 25 points and five steals to lead Northern Iowa (4-0), with Phyfe adding 22 points.
Jonah Radebaugh finished with 24 points on 8-of-22 shooting, six boards, three assists and two steals to lead the Bears (2-2).
Northern Iowa hosts UT-Martin Tuesday.
Drake women turn back Creighton
DES MOINES — The Drake women’s basketball team won a defensive slugfest over Creighton on Saturday night at the Knapp Center, 63-53.
Becca Hittner had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Drake (3-1), while Sara Rhine had a team-high 16 points and Brenni Rose added 15.
The Bulldogs never trailed Creighton (2-1) by more than five points and outscored the Bluejays 35-28 in the second half.
Olivia Elger made five 3-pointers to lead Creighton with 15 points.
