SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans take down G-R girls, 54-28

STATE CENTER — Renae Schaper tallied a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the West Marshall girls’ basketball team take care of Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 54-28, in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

Teresa Disney added a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds for the Trojans (3-0, 1-0), who led 20-2 after the first quarter and 40-14 at the half. Karlyn Snider added 11 points and seven assists.

Mahayla Olson led Gladbrook-Reinbeck (0-3, 0-2) with 10 points and Saari Kuehl finished with eight points.

Collins-Maxwell too much for GMG

GARWIN — Emily Vaughn scored a game-high 15 points but it wasn’t enough to get the GMG girls’ basketball team its first win of the season as the Wolverines fell 51-27 to Collins-Maxwell in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Jordan and Jenna Yilek both chipped in four points for GMG (0-3, 0-2), while Lindsey Slifer and Ashlyn Plowman put up two points apiece.

Reagan Franzen led Collins-Maxwell (3-1, 2-0) to its third-straight win with 13 points and Kenzie Wierson finished with 11. The Spartans outscored GMG 20-9 in the third quarter to break open a close game.

Hames helps AGWSR outlast BCLUW

ACKLEY — Alyssa Hames scored a game-high 21 points to power the AGWSR girls’ basketball team past BCLUW 42-40 in Friday’s NICL West Division showdown.

Rachel Sicard added eight points and Grace Finger had seven more for the Cougars (3-1, 1-0), who didn’t surrender the lead in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.

BCLUW had a chance to tie at the buzzer but was whistled for traveling on its final possession.

Betula Messerly led the Comets (2-2, 0-1) with 14 points and nine rebounds, making four 3-pointers in the game. Madison Ubben added 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and Allison Engle finished with seven points and six assists in the league loss.

Rebels finish off West Marshall boys

STATE CENTER — Tyler Tscherter scored a game-high 19 points as the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team pulled away from West Marshall for a 52-35 win in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

William Kiburis added 10 points, Eli Thede had eight and Luke Riffey finished with seven as the Rebels (2-0, 2-0) broke open a close game with a 13-2 advantage in the fourth period.

West Marshall (0-2, 0-1) used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to get back into the game, which G-R led 26-16 at the half. The Trojans were unable to complete the comeback and fell off pace in the final quarter.

Gabe Jones led West Marshall with 11 points and six rebounds, while Qwinton Wilder finished with eight points. Caleb Keigan had six points and four assists, and Brian Morrison added six points and five rebounds. Manny Lazard pitched in four points and three steals, and Brayden Evertsen also had six rebounds in the loss.

Redhawk wrestling splits in opener

LA PORTE CITY — The North Tama wrestling team opened the season with a 36-30 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center before falling to Class 2A No. 2 Union Community, 42-18 in Thursday’s season-opening triangular.

The Redhawks (1-1, 1-1 NICL) only won two of the six contested matches with AP/GC, but capitalized on four forfeits from the Falcons. Noah Weber notched a first-period pin of Drew Ogle at 160 pounds, and James Hill did the same against Trey Morris at 220 to tie the dual at 30-all. Xander Bradley received a forfeit at 285 for the final margin in the dual.

Hill and Bradley accounted for North Tama’s only match wins against Union, both scoring pins. Bradley flattened Gabe Hanson in 37 seconds, and Hill pinned Dacoda Marvets in 2:19.

Storm matmen 0-2 in NICL triangular

SUMNER — The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team suffered a pair of North Iowa Cedar League losses in Thursday’s season-opening triangular, falling 45-34 to host Sumner-Fredericksburg and 52-30 to Hudson.

Three wrestlers went 2-0 on the night for the Storm (0-2, 0-2). Fourth-ranked Carter Kolthoff captured a major decision, 9-0, over Cael Judisch of Sumner-Fredericksburg and a first-period pin of Hudson’s Brody King at 106 pounds. No. 7 Taylor Kolthoff spent just 2:01 on the mat in pins of S-F’s Danny Dillon and Hudson’s Devon Liddle at 120. Kade Pekarek, at 160, posted first-period pins of Spencer Matt (S-F) and Jake Yoder (Hudson).

Sumner-Fredericksburg won eight of 14 weights over the Storm with six pins. SH-BCLUW had three pins, including Michael Fuller’s victory over Treyce Ensign at 170 pounds.

All five Storm wins against Hudson were pins — one each for the Kolthoffs, Pekarek, Lucas Gunderson (220) and Nicholas Paxton (285). Hudson piled up six pins and two forfeits.
