SPORTS SHORTS: UNI’s Green honored by Valley hoops

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — University of Northern Iowa’s AJ Green was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after helping the Panthers earn wins over Bradley and Illinois State.

Against Illinois State, the sophomore guard finished 9-of-14 from the field with a team-leading 23 points.

Green then followed with a career-night against Bradley. Green scored a career-high of 35 points, made a career-high of 10 field goals and set a career-high 3-pointers made at seven.

UNI will host Indiana State tonight with tip-off set for 7 p.m.

Doyle wins first Big Ten weekly award

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior Kathleen Doyle was named the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

The La Grange Park, Ill. Native scored a career-high of 33 points in the Hawkeyes’ 108-72 win over Illinois. In that game, Doyle shot 78.6 percent and was 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

Against Northwestern, Doyle scored 15 points and totaled seven assists.

Iowa will host Maryland on Thursday.

Espenmiller-McGraw picked for honor

AMES — Iowa State freshman Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.

Espenmiller-McGraw earned the honor after scoring a career-high of 17 points. Espenmiller-McGraw was 7-of-9 from the field which helped the Cyclones hand Texas Tech its first loss of the season.

Espenmiller-McGraw also helped the Cyclones close non-conference play with a win against North Alabama in which she saw 35 minutes of playing time and recorded the best plus-minus on the team at plus-17.

Iowa’s Toussaint is B1G’s top freshman

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa point guard Joe Toussaint was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Toussaint scored a career-high of 18 points against No. 21 Penn State on Saturday. The Bronx, N.Y. native scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half. In addition, Toussaint had a team-leading four assists to go with two steals.

The Hawkeyes will go on the road and take on Nebraska tonight with tipoff set for 8:07 p.m.
