Cyclones add transfer from Memphis

Tyler Harris

AMES — For all the Cyclones have lost to transfers, the Iowa State men’s basketball team is finally on the receiving end.

University of Memphis transfer Tyler Harris announced with a video on his Twitter page on Saturday that he has committed to join the Cyclones. The status of his eligibility is not immediately known, but he is expected to have to sit out a season per NCAA rules of transferring from one Division I program to another.

Harris, a 5-foot-9 guard from the Memphis suburbs, started in 15 of 36 games as a freshman but came off the bench in all of the Tigers’ 31 games this past winter. He averaged 10.8 points in his first season and just 8.7 as a sophomore.

Harris was on the American Athletic Conference’s all-Freshman Team two seasons ago, leading the team in 3-pointers made with the school’s freshman record 79. His 59 3-pointers led the Tigers again this winter.

He announced his intention to transfer a week ago on Twitter. Harris is the first incoming transfer for Iowa State after the Cyclones saw Zion Griffin, Caleb Grill and Terrence Lewis depart the program and sophomore Tyrese Haliburton declare for the NBA Draft.
