MHS softball splits with host Hoover

DES MOINES — Marshalltown softball experienced its third win of the season as well as late-game heartbreak in Monday’s road doubleheader with Des Moines Hoover.

In the evening’s first game, the Bobcats (3-20) pulled out a 7-4 victory over the Huskies (3-19) on the back of eight hits and a complete game from Kailee Pollard.

Pollard gave up four earned runs and struck out six. On offense, Gabby Himes led the Bobcats with two hits. Erica Johnson, Madi Finch, Paige Wertzberger, Avery Mull, Maggie Augustine and Khloe Shipley had one hit apiece. Augustine had two RBIs.

The second game of the evening was in Marshalltown’s grasp after a four-run sixth inning, but a three-run burst from the Huskies in the bottom of the seventh inning ripped the win from the Bobcats’ hands.

A home run from Wertzberger and two hits each from Finch, Mull, Kyra Feldman and Emma McWherter kept the Bobcats scoring and fighting. Mull pitched a complete game on the mound and gave up nine runs (only five were earned). The winning run for the Huskies was scored by Aubrie Hiskey on a fielder’s choice by Brooklynn Royster.

MHS starts postseason play in Class 5A Region 5 against Cedar Falls (at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex) Thursday at 7 p.m.
