Greazel is medalist at Joe August Invite

Grant Greazel had a charmed Friday afternoon at Elmwood Country Club for the Joe August Invite, taking advantage of the knowledge he has of his home course to win medalist honors against some of the best golfers in the state.

Greazel shot a 4-under 66 and recorded six birdies around the par-70 course, winning by three shots over Ankeny’s Hunter Johnson.

Boys’ golf coach Lucas Johnson was ecstatic with his start junior’s performance.

“Grant Greazel was outstanding on the day,” Johnson said. “Even though he shot one of the best rounds in the history of Bobcat golf, he was still talking after the round about shots he felt like could have improved upon. He’s worked as hard as anyone on his game over the past couple of summers and when a player puts in the time those are the kinds of rounds that are possible.”

As a team, the Bobcats came in third place in the 10-team field, only behind the unbeaten Ankeny Hawks and second-placed Indianola. Colin Schmit finished in 10th with a 5-over 75, and his younger brother Ryan came in 26th with an 80. Fourth on the team was Cael Sandvick with a 14-over 84 and 35th-place finish. Rounding out the Bobcat scores were Drake Polley at 15-over 85 (placing 37th) and Kevin Strand at 17-over 87 (42nd).

Johnson had positive things to say about the team’s finish and particularly the showing of Colin Schmit.

“As a team, we talk a lot about resilience and the ability to bounce back from a big number, and no one exemplified that more today than Colin Schmit,” Johnson said. “He had back-to-back double bogies on the front nine and wasn’t happy with the way he was playing, but he stayed patient and shot 2-under on the back, including an eagle on 13 and a pair of birdies to close out the round.”

The Bobcats play Tuesday at the Tiger Invite in Cedar Falls.
