GMG girls fall to Baxter

BAXTER — GMG girls basketball’s scoring droughts have caused some frustrations for head coach Justin Hornberg throughout the season, and in the Wolverines’ 40-20 loss to Baxter Monday night it was no different.

After scoring four points in the first four minutes of the game, the Wolverines (3-10, 2-7 Iowa Star South) were held to one point offensively the rest of the first half.

This left GMG trailing the Bolts (10-1, 7-0 Iowa Star South) 24-5 at the halftime whistle.

Jenna Yilek led GMG with six points, while Marriah Stonewall scored five and Emily Vaughn three.

Eagles too tall for Trojans

STATE CENTER — A strong scoring night from Joey Tollefson was not enough to keep Pella Christian from beating the West Marshall boys 72-54 Monday night.

The Trojans (4-7) trailed by 17 points at the half (41-24) but twice got within double-digits of the Eagles (6-7). The size of Pella Christian’s interior players, though, was too much in the second half for the Trojans to mount a comeback.

Tollefson led West Marshall with 21 points and hit five 3-pointers. He was one of three double-digit scorers, joined by Graham Nason with 12 and Parker Reese with 10. Reese led the team in rebounds with seven. Payton Hart had eight points, three steals and two blocks.

Luke Hageman was the champion of the 132 pound bracket, going 3-0 without pinning an opponent. Winning by tech fall over Justin Knaack of AC/GC in the first round, he defeated IF-A’s Brody Hovertsen via 9-6 decision and Brock Mathers of Central Springs 9-5 in the final.

Nick Rebik finished second at 160 pounds, pinning IF-A’s Gage Pohlman and beating Algona’s Riley Goche via a 6-2 decision before getting pinned by Class 2A No. 5 Gabriel Christensen of Ballard in the final.

At 120 pounds, Class 2A No. 3 at 113 pounds Carter Kolthoff walked out with a first-place finish. He did so by pinning Marshalltown’s Hector De La Cruz and Jacob Michaelson of Iowa Falls-Alden before defeating Class 1A No. 4 at 120, Denver’s Joe Ebaugh, with a 12-11 decision.

Aiden Farnsworth finished fourth in heavyweight after going 1-2. After a loss to Logan Meendering of Algona, he pinned Carter Heilskov of Hampton Dumont. In the consolation bracket final, he fell short, pinned by Ballard’s Ehresman Brady.

Ridout went undefeated and pinned Logan Zuck of Jesup before defeating Nashua-Plainfield’s Trey Nelson via 6-4 decision. Nelson is No. 10 in Class 1A at 132 pounds. The final was an injury default victory for Ridout.

The other East Marshall/GMG victor was 220 pounder Connor Murty, who finds himself No. 7 in Class 2A at his weight. He did it with pins of Don Bosco’s Jared Thirty (Class 1A No. 5) and Cole Kelly (Class 1A No. 7) of West Hancock.
