SPORTS SHORTS: Garza is Big Ten Co-Player of the Week

IOWA CITY — For the third time this season, University of Iowa men’s basketball standout Luka Garza has been recognized by the Big Ten Conference as he and Ohio State’s Duane Washington Jr. shared Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Garza, who was also tabbed the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week, helped lead the Hawkeyes to a pair of victories last week over No. 21 Wisconsin (77-62) and Penn State (74-68). The All-American averaged 26.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, two assists and one block.

Garza became Iowa’s all-time leading scorer during Sunday’s game against Penn State, surpassing the 32-year old record held by the late Roy Marble.

Clark sets B1G record with 11th award

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa freshman Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week Honor Roll, the league announced Monday.

Clark has tallied 18 Big Ten Weekly honors on the season, including a Big Ten record 11 freshman honors, four Big Ten Player of the Week honors, and three Player of the Week Honor Roll nods. Clark’s four Big Ten Player of the Week honors as a freshman are believed to be the record.

Clark recorded her fourth consecutive and eighth total 30-point game of the season in Iowa’s 96-78 win over Penn State. Her eight 30-point games are the most this season by any student-athlete in NCAA Division I women’s basketball and most by a freshman since 2009-10.

Donarski is Freshman of Week again

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State women’s basketball guard Lexi Donarski picked up her fourth Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week award, the league announced Monday.

Donarski averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game en route to her fourth Freshman of the Week honor. Against Kansas, Donarski tallied 20 points, four rebounds and four assists as she helped ISU to their 12th-straight win over the Jayhawks. Against the Oklahoma State, she totaled 12 points and added a team-high five assists to go along with two rebounds.

Donarski is averaging 13.0 points on the season, which is the most of any freshman in the Big 12 Conference.
