SPORTS SHORTS: ISU’s Joens named to Miller’s Top-10

ATLANTA — Iowa State women’s basketball standout Ashley Joens is a Top-10 Finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

Joens was averaging 24.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game for the Cyclones going into Wednesday’s game at West Virginia. The Iowa City native ranks seventh nationally in scoring average and is one of just two players in the nation averaging more than 24 points and 8 rebounds per game.

Recently, Joens was named National Player of the Week by the USBWA and the Naismith Trophy after the Cyclones defeated Oklahoma State and topped Baylor in Waco, Texas, for the first time since 1997. Joens was also a Cheryl Miller Award Top-5 Finalist in 2019-20.

In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.

The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented on April 9.

Hawkeyes sweep B1G weekly honors

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa junior Monika Czinano and freshman Caitlin Clark were named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference announced.

In a pair of games against No. 23 Northwestern and Minnesota, Czinano averaged 28.5 points, eight rebounds, and shot 28-of-33 (.848) from the field. Czinano recorded her second double-double this season, scoring a career-high 34 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Czinano is current ranked first in the country in field-goal percentage (70.1).

Clark averaged 22.5 points and 9.5 assists last week, recording her fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 assists against the Gophers. She had 23 points and eight assists against the Wildcats.

Feuerbach earns first Big 12 honor

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State women’s basketball guard Kylie Feuerbach picked up her first Big 12 Freshman of the Week award, the league announced Monday.

In Sunday’s game against No. 9 Baylor, Feuerbach tallied 15 points, three rebounds and three steals. She was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also added four rebounds and two assists in a win at Kansas State.

Keckeisen picked for Big 12 mat award

IRVING, Texas — Northern Iowa redshirt freshman Parker Keckeisen was tabbed the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after picking up a ranked victory over Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer.

Keckeisen earned a 3-2, sudden-victory decision over Geer, the Cowboy’s first loss of the season.

Keckeisen (6-0) has two major decisions and a tech fall on the year. He is the second Panther wrestler to earn Wrestler of the Week honors.

Drake’s Brodie selected for MVC honor

ST. LOUIS — Drake University junior Darnell Brodie has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Brodie had his first two career double-doubles on the week and three games with double-figure rebounds for the No. 25 Bulldogs. The transfer from Seton Hall averaged 10.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game with career-best performances in scoring and rebounding.

Brodie opened the week with his first career double-double with 16 points and career-high 15 rebounds at Missouri State. He followed that with a 14-rebound night in the series finale at Missouri State.

He then opened the Illinois State series with a career-high 20 points on 10-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds.

The honor is the third for the Bulldogs this season and the first for Brodie.
