Four champions lead MHS boys to 3rd at Mason City

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team crowned four individual champions on its way to a third-place finish at the Mohawks’ own invitational on Monday.

The host Mohawks totaled 145 points to hold off Decorah (113) and Marshalltown (107) in the eight-team meet.

Marshalltown’s three wins on the track were in sprint events, as Deonté Dean finished in front of the pack in both the 100-meter dash (10.95 seconds) and the 200 (22.28), while Jaiden Buchanan led the field to the finish line in the 400 (50.15).

In the field, Malachai Holmes had the top leap in the long jump, clearing 20 feet, 8 1/2 inches for first place by nearly a foot.

Runner-up results for MHS included Dwight Joar in the 110 high hurdles, the Bobcats’ 4×100 relay team (Mannie Kparyea, Buchanan, Jayzek Lee and Dean), and Aidan DeVolder in the shot put (48-1).
