Henson medals to lead MHS to 2nd

ANKENY — Amber Henson rebounded from a rocky start to finish in third place and the Marshalltown girls’ golf team racked up a runner-up finish at the Ankeny Invite on Thursday at Otter Creek Golf Course.

Henson, a Bobcat junior, was 4-over through her first three holes but played at 1-over for the remainder of her round, dropping a pair of birdies to help her share the second-best score of the day. West Des Moines Valley’s Paige Hoffman shot the medalist round of 2-under-par 69, while Henson and Valley’s Saffire Sayre both shot 76. Sayre scored the silver medal on a card-back.

“Amber Henson did an awesome job finding her rhythm after having a rough start to her opening holes on the front nine,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson.

Marshalltown senior Kyra Feldman finished in ninth place with her 91, while Norah Wilson shared the 10th-best round but had to settle for 12th place.

“Kyra Feldman and Norah Wilson also showed strong improvement and benefitted from seeing Otter Creek earlier in the dual meet this season,” Johnson said.

Brynn Van Buren’s 106 completed the team scoring for the Bobcats, who totaled 365 to close the day in second place.

Valley was comfortably in front of the field with its 330, while Southeast Polk was only two shots back of Marshalltown in third in the 11-team tournament.

“Teamwise, we know we have areas we can continue to improve upon, but it’s an encouraging start knowing that we are able to compete with a larger field of teams,” Johnson said of his squad’s first 18-hole competition this season.

The Bobcats are back at it today with the Lamson Invitational at 9 a.m. at Willow Creek Golf Course in Des Moines.
