Tiger softball snaps 14-game slide

CRESTON — Marshalltown Community College softball got very familiar with Southwestern CC over the weekend as the visiting Tigers played the Spartans four times in two days.

The Tigers went 1-3 over the weekend, dropping their overall record to 6-38, but snapped a 14-game losing skid by winning Sunday’s finale.

In game one of the series, SWiCC beat the Tigers 6-5. MCC had an early lead and led 5-2 thanks to a home run from Reagan McIlrath — who scored three times and drove in two runs — and Lexy Davis driving in two runs. But the Tigers gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, leaving Bailey Ashton to take the loss with six runs allowed and seven walks. She struck out six.

The second game on Saturday went poorly from the start for MCC, as starting pitcher Kodie Hoskey only went 3 1/3 innings. She gave up 12 runs, 16 hits and struck out three.

Maggie Harrison drove in three of MCC’s five runs, with Davis and Aspyn Harrison driving in one run each. The game ended early, 13-5, in five innings.

In Sunday’s opener, the Tigers trailed 4-1 through four innings. But in the fifth, Southwestern scored five runs to end the game, handing Ashton the 9-1 loss. Ashton gave up nine runs and 12 hits while striking out two.

The final game of the series was a high-scoring affair with both teams reaching double digits. Davis led the way for the Tigers, driving in seven runs on four hits (one of them a home run). Bridgette McKinney drove in three runs and recorded three hits, and she hit the team’s other home run.

Hoskey surrendered nine runs (six earned) and 13 hits in six innings, striking out four. Ashton came on in relief in the seventh and gave up a home run but struck out three for the save.

The Tigers visit Southeastern CC on Wednesday afternoon.
