Smith helps MHS mix it up with 3A powers

NEWTON — The Marshalltown boys’ cross country team finished in lockstep with some of the top schools in Class 3A during the 45th Steve McDermott Cardinal Invite here Tuesday, highlighted by Conner Smith’s third-place finish.

The Bobcats came in fifth out of 10 teams with a 133 total, trailing 3A No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes (36), No. 3 North Polk (60), No. 4 Pella (85) and host Newton (96).

Smith, who is ranked 13th in 4A, clocked in at 16 minutes, 46.4 seconds, to trail on Dallas Center-Grimes’ top-ranked Aidan Ramsey (16:18.1) and seventh-ranked Zach Sporaa (16:40.0) from North Polk. Eleventh-ranked Max Sporaa from North Polk was barely three seconds behind Smith.

Bobcat junior Jason Strand scored 18th place for his team, timing in at 18:01.5, and Anthoneih Kopsa came in 29th in 19:01.8. Andrew Kodis clocked in at 19:40.4 for 39th place, and Diego Tejada rounded out the team scoring in 44th position (19:57.2).

John Moellers (46th, 20:03.1) and Marco Herrera (49th, 20:20.6) also competed for the Bobcats.

Marshalltown’s girls were the only team unable to field five runners in the 10-team invite, but the Bobcats did have three runners finish in the top 13. Micah Blevins led MHS in ninth place in 21:47.0) and Rachel Smith was moments behind in 10th (21:56.5), with Veronica Herrera taking 13th in 22:03.1. Grace Rasmussen made her way to 41st place (24:40.8), but she was the only other Bobcat runner.

Seventh-ranked North Polk picked up a team title with 38 points, No. 13 Pella was second with 61 points and third-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes was third in the meet with 69 points.

Next up for Marshalltown is a trip to Knoxville on Sept. 28.
