Hanford leads Trojans, Anderson buoys Bobcats at Saydel Invite

DES MOINES — West Marshall freshman Shane Hanford won the 106-pound bracket to lead the Trojans to a fourth-place finish at the Saydel Invitational on Saturday.

West Marshall totaled 148.5 points to trail Waukee (182), Boone (181.5), Iowa City High (178) and Roland-Story (174.5). Interstate 35, with 138 points, separated the Trojans from Marshalltown (115) in seventh in the 14-team tournament.

All nine Bobcat wrestlers placed fifth or better, led by freshman Xayvion Anderson’s runner-up finish at 132.

Hanford went 4-0 on the mat with two wins by pin, a technical fall, and a 7-0 decision over Waukee’s Nick McCallister in the finals.

West Marshall’s other finalist was Wyatt Weuve at 195, where he went 2-1 with all three matches decided by pinfall. Weuve fell to Boone’s McGuire Bryant in 3 minutes, 20 seconds, in the finals.

Luke Vawter finished third at 126 with his lone loss coming by fall to Class 3A No. 6 Kael Kuntz of Iowa City High. Vawter scored a 12-4 major decision over Marshalltown’s Edgar Almanza in the third-place match.

Caden Vellinga (138) placed fourth for the Trojans.

For Marshalltown, Anderson was the team’s lone finalist. He pinned Waukee Northwest’s Owen Klunder in the second round, got a 6-3 decision over Chase Baker of Interstate 35 in the semifinals, and suffered a 7-1 setback to Waukee’s Wes Anderson in the finals.

Luke Hageman (145), Johan Gomez (182), Gannon Williams (220) and Tristan King (285) all placed third for MHS. Each suffered semifinal defeat, three to ranked opponents. Hageman was edged by I-35’s Nick Steinlage, ranked seventh in 1A; Williams lost by technical fall to 3A No. 1 Ben Kueter of Iowa City High; and King dropped a 5-0 decision to 1A No. 3 Ryley Snell of I-35.

Hageman, Gomez and Williams (ranked seventh in 3A) all rebounded to win by pin in the match for third.

Lucas Bantz (106), Ivan Pantoja (113) and Almanza (126) all placed fourth for MHS, and Damien Rodriguez (120) finished fifth.

Mustangs 1-4 in Grinnell

GRINNELL — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team finished fifth out of six teams at the Grinnell Duals on Saturday, going 1-4 in the round-robin event.

The Mustangs beat Mount Pleasant, 54-24, in the third round. EM/GMG was beaten by Bondurant-Farrar (62-9), Cedar Rapids Prairie (60-23), Webster City (65-9) and Grinnell (39-35).

Two Mustang matmen went 5-0 for the day, as Dom Ridout and Garrett Kerber both had perfect days. Ridout, Class 2A’s top-ranked 138-pounder, had two first-period pins, a technical fall and a forfeit. His biggest win, however, was a 2-1 decision over 3A No. 2 Chase Fiser of Bondurant-Farrar.

Kerber won twice by pin, twice by decision and got one forfeit.

Kordell Negrete went 3-2 at 145, while Xavier Slifer (120), Tyler Fuller (152), Drew Wheater (195) and Xander Bowers (220) each won twice.

STC second in own duals

TAMA — The South Tama wrestling team finished second in its own duals tournament here Saturday, going 4-0 before falling to Class 2A No. 3 Independence in the final round.

The host Trojans posted wins over Des Moines East (54-20), Iowa City Regina (62-14), Vinton-Shellsburg (60-21) and Pella (49-30) before being defeated by the Mustangs (58-21).

Logan Arp and Gavin Bridgewater both went 5-0 on the day, while five Trojans — Amare Chavez, MaCael Bear, Jacob Youngbear, Boden Koehler and Rudy Papakee — each went 4-1.

Arp, ranked second in Class 2A, won his only contested match at 138 pounds by fall. Bridgewater picked up three pins, a forfeit and a technical fall at 195 pounds.

Koehler won three times by fall at 170, while 12th-ranked Papakee got two pins, a forfeit, and a 10-8 decision over Independence’s third-ranked Marcus Beatty.
