SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels rough up S-K in substate opener

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 6 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team started the postseason with a 10-0 triumph over Sigourney-Keota in Thursday’s Substate 6 quarterfinal match.

The Rebels (14-1) rattled off nine goals in the first half to put this win to bed early.

Isaac Clark led the GCGR attack with three goals on the night. Austin Betts and Ethan Gienger both had two goals and one assist, Aiden Hunemuller had two goals, while Tyler Nolder tallied one goal and six assists. Nolder is tied for the 1A lead in Iowa with 37 assists this season.

Cooper Hoy chipped in with an assist as well for GCGR, which plays host to Pella Christian in Monday’s substate semifinals at 6:30 p.m. in Reinbeck. Pella Christian (7-9) dispatched Williamsburg 4-1 in their first-round pairing.

Sigourney-Keota (1-12) managed just one shot on net in Thursday’s loss.

J-Hawks end MHS boys’ soccer season

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer season came to a close with a 5-1 loss to Cedar Rapids Jefferson in Thursday’s Class 3A Substate 3 quartrefinals.

The host J-Hawks (4-10) broke a 1-all tie by scoring four unanswered goals in the second half. Jefferson will travel to face No. 2 Johnston (14-1) in Monday’s substate semifinals.

No match statistics were made available as of press time for the Bobcats, who finished with a 5-13 record.

STC/EM doubled up by visiting Cadets

TAMA — The South Tama County/East Marshall boys’ soccer team was unable to capitalize on its home-field advantage, falling 4-2 to Iowa Falls-Alden in Thursday’s opening round of Class 2A Substate 3 play.

The Trojans bowed out with a 6-11 final record. Iowa Falls-Alden (9-8) advances to face sixth-ranked Gilbert (14-2) in Monday’s substate semifinals in Gilbert. Seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier (8-6) hosts Hudson (9-7) in the other semifinal.

Mustangs slide to 0-2 after road loss

EDDYVILLE — The East Marshall baseball team dipped to 0-2 to start the season with Thursday’s 11-1, five-inning loss at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The Mustangs allowed six unearned runs in the loss.

Tyler Fuller singled and scored, and Carter Anderson had a double and an RBI for the East Marshall bats. Starting pitcher Connor Hassin took the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits over three innings. Blake Fisher pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits.
